By Papa Wealey expected to contest another GP this year, although he should be back on a bike in a few months. American Dean Matson made his comeback debut at the 250cc British MX GP. Matson, who broke his kneecap at the May 1 French International MX, failed to score any points at the British GP. "I've only had a chance to ride twice before coming here, and I guess I'm about 80%," said Matson. Tommy Lynch and Je£( Heino teamed up to give Fastline/MCM Racing (Suz) the win in the three-hour EBC Endurance Challenge at New Hampshire International Speedway, June 20. The pair completed 132 laps of the 1.6-mile course, finishing oneminute, 7.184-seconds in front of Team America (Hon), piloted by Woody Deatherage and Michael Barnes. Third went to defending National Champions Dutchman Racing (Suz), with Andrew Stroud and Scott Zampach splitting the saddle time. Fastline/MCM leads the championship with 112 poi.nts to America's 98 and Dutchman's 82. The GTU class was won by T.B.R.Endurance (Hon), with team owner Laney Cobb riding with William Himmelsbach, who became available after blowing up the transmission on his own bike. Hornblower Racing was second with American Flyers third. T.B.R.Endurance moved into second in the GTU championship point standings with 62 to Moto Liberty/ Nankai's 87, who did notfinish in New Hampshire. Vicious Racing's Fabian Cortez III wanted to clear up something he said in the coverage of the AMA 250cc Grand Prix event held at Brainerd, June 14. Cortez said his tuner had quit, but at Loudon said he "was fired." Cortez was thinking about retirement and going back to college because he wasn't making any money. But he struck a deal with team owner Nate Lundy and will continue campaigning the team's Yamaha TZ250, as well as competing for Keystone Racing in the GTO class of the EBC Endurance I Challenge. Although nothing has been finalized, AMA/CCS is considering changing the current EBC Brakes Endurance Challenge format. According to Roger Edmonston, the changes may include having two separate endurance races - a 90minute GTO race and a 60-minule GTU event, rather than the traditional three-hour event with both classes combined. There is also talk of changing 750cc Supers port to Unlimited Supersport and allowing 749-1100cc motorcycles to compete together. •A vintage road race billed as the TwoWheel Greats Showdown was held at New Hampshire International SjXedway on June 20, with Jerry Wood and his Rickman Triumph taking the victory over the Honda 450 of Todd Henning. The marquee riders Dave Roper, Dave Aldana and Gary Nixon - finished third through fifth. . In sidecar racing action at the New Hampshire International Speedway, June 21, the team of Kurt Dillman and Jeff Eddy went wire-to-wire for the .victory. The pair rode an outfit featuring a Kawasaki ZXIO engine in a Windle chassis. IN THE WIND CORRECTION: Jason Pridmore won the June 13 Brainerd round of the AMA/CCS 750cc Supersport Series riding a Kawasaki, not a Suzuki as was reported in last week's issue. Rob Phillis (Kaw) moved into the point standings lead of the World Championship Superbike Series by winning the first race and then finishing second in the second race at the June 22 Andorran round at the Jarama circuit in Spain. Doug Polen (Duc) won the second race, but logged a DNF in race one when his clutch failed while he was shadowing Phillis just three laps from the finish. After five rounds, Phillis leads the championship, 148.2-141.3, over Polen, while Raymond Roche (Duc) is third with 130 points. Roche finished second in the first race and sixth in the second leg at Jarama. Californian Rich Arnaiz (Hon) finished 12th in both races. Two-time World Superbike Champion Fred Merkel returned to action after a lengthy lay-off due to the broken right foot he suffered in a pre-season crash, but the Californian crashed in the first race and called it a day. Carl "Red" Pugh, 71, the corporate track superintendent for International Speedway Corporation (ISe) of Daytona Beach, Florida, died on Friday, June 19 in Tucson, Arizona. Pugh, who had undergone successful throat surgery in late October of last year, was at Tucson Raceway. Park to oversee paving of the track. Raised in Maryland, Pugh first carne to Daytona with a company involved in the construction of Daytona International Speedway. When the construction was completed, Bill France Sr. asked him to stay on. In the years since, Pugh has been the individual charged with the hands-on, day-to-day role in the vast majority of major capital improvement projects' at Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Darlington Raceway. "Outside of trips to other tracks and the time he was away during his surgery, I don't remember a day in the past 34 years when 'Red' hasn't been here," said Bill France Jr., chairman of the board and CEO of ISC. "We will all miss him." No immediate relatives survive Pugh. 'Memorial donations may be made to I-CARE, 1122 2nd Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32118. • CRESP~ • If you've been to the United States Grand Prix or the American round of the World Superbike 'Series in the past three years, you probably already know about James Crespinel. His commissioned work includes portraits of Mikhail Gorbachev, Martina Navratilova, Michael Jordan, Brian Bosworth and Steve Largent, in addition to those of James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. He is quickly becoming one of the most sought after competition artists in the United States. Many world class riders themselves own original oil paintings by Crespinel ana now 'lithographs of his works are available for both the collector and enthusiast alike, through Cycle News Products. KEVIN SCHWANTZ One of the fastest and most exciting riders on the Grand Prix circuit is Kevin Schwantz on his #;J4 Lucky Strike Suzuki. If his skill puts him at the top he will certainly be one of the most popular champions ever. The original 7' x 8' oil painting was completed at the 1991 Daytona 200, and the deluxe edition lithographs were signed by Kevin Schwantz at the 1991 U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca. RANDY MAMoLA No fewer than four times has Mamola been within just a few points of gaining his first World Championshill title. He has been on the rostrum 57 times in his career and you can never count him out. The 1992 season will see his return to the GP scene on a Budweiser Yamaha ride. This fine piece of art was. created in Crespinel's studio and is a slightly different imaKe of the one that was painted at the U.S. Grand Prix in 1989 at Laguna Seca.
