At Perris MX, Eric Weber (113) led Joe Gallo (59) and Craig Caringella (5). of the season in the 750cc class aboard his GMA Racing Harley-Davidson XR750, edging out Formula GP Heavyweight winner Rich Levert. . An extremely strong win was turned in by 500cc SporlSman victor Paul Shoen in the second race. While dicing with Rood Lighthouse for the lead near the halfway mark, Shoen's Arizona Powder Coat-sponsored BSA B50 went down in the debris from the crashing Veloceue of Lighthouse as both braked heavily in tum three. Shoen was able to remoun t and make his way around to the hot pit for a technical inspection and then rejoin the race. Rapidly making up time, Shoen regained the lead to take the win. JUNE 12 Billy Joe Mercier put on two inspiring rides en route to the combined Pro class victory during round three of the GFI night series held at Perris Raceway. Tracy Monterone motored to the holeshot in the first moto with Mercier and Brian Maney in tow. Mercier was pushing Monterone hard but could not get by for most of the race. Manley was riding inconsistently and seemed to be slowed by small errors each lap. Near the end of the moto Mercier pulled up beside Monierone in the fastest section of the course, and then planted his machine under Monterone. shovmg him to the top of a high-banked berm. Mercier hammered the rockers and put time on Monterone. Manley disposed of the now-floundering Monterone two laps from the finish to move into second and then caught Mercier, but could not find an opening to pass. Mercier won, followed by Manley and Momerone. Mercier holeshot the second moto and was gone. Manley showed some style by jumping an entire section of rockers, a maneuver that has yet to be duplicated during the series, while Monterone crashed hard and was carried off the track. Monterone's DNF in the second moto l?ve third on the night to Steve Shippy. Eddie Staab inherited the lead in the fust 250cc Beeinner moto after Joe Hefferman got over-amuous and jumped early race leader Jon Ortiz. Staab railed the track in perfect form and scored the victory, well out of reach of Hefferman and Scott Larson. Mike Barney led the second moto butwas passed on lap two by Tim Walker. Staab was third but was on the move, first catching and passing Barney on lap four and then the leader Walker two laps from the finish, Staab styled his T.R.E. Suzuki across the line for the overall win, while Walker was passed by Ortiz on the final lap, giving Ortiz second for the night. 50 FlRST TIMER. RACE 1: 1. Tommy Cochran (Yam); 2.
