T
he second round of MotoAmerica
2022 saw America's best converge on
the Southeast at the undulating Road
Atlanta circuit, and the form guide of not fol-
lowing the form guide that started in COTA
continued.
As was the case in Texas two weeks ago,
Danilo Petrucci's adaptation to American racing
kept its course as the Italian won race one,
despite airing his frustrations at the apparent
dangerous nature of the Georgian venue.
Petrucci's race-one win came after current
number-one Jake Gagne threw the factory
Yamaha down the road after opening up a
commanding lead on the sixth lap of the race
at turn five, his machine cartwheeling into
the air fence and looking more like a crushed
soda can than a race bike at the end.
Petrucci was battling with COTA rival
Mathew Scholtz for most of the race and
would come home 1.4 seconds clear at
the flag. The result was a positive one for
Scholtz who admitted the tight and twisty
nature of Road Atlanta would benefit his
Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 better than
the top speed-heavy Texas venue in which
Petrucci's factory Ducati shined.
Third in race one went to Vision Wheel M4
Ecstar Suzuki's Jake Lewis, although at 29
seconds back he knew the podium was a
gift after Gagne's crash.
