50 Years Ago MAY 2, 1972 P106 LOOKING BACK We featured an artist's conception of Russ Collins' latest project, Battlestar Exotica, on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago... Donnie Hansen won the Pontiac Supercross doubleheader... Paul Denis, Bruce Bunch and Ron Lechien were the top racers at the NMA World Mini GP at Saddleback... Jorge Jobe won the 250cc Motocross Grand Prix in Payerne, Switzerland, and Andre Malherbe got it done at the 500cc GP in Belgium... We hosted Cycle News Night at Costa Mesa's Orange County Fairgrounds, saying it was the "most fun ever!" And it probably was. 40 Years Ago MAY 5, 1982 We were concerned about the passing of a helmet law in California. It hadn't happened yet, but it was getting closer after clearing another hurdle in the Assembly Transportation Committee... Brad Lackey was the big winner in Marysville, California, at the Sierra Mesa Grand Prix, where he left $1200 richer... Jack Penton, Dave Mungenast and Ed Schmidt were the class winners at the ISDT Qualifier in Potosi, Missouri... Joel Nichols and Yvon Duhamel went 1-2 at the Road Race National at Road Atlanta.
