FLAT TRACK I PROGRESSIVE AMERICAN FLAT TRACK
BY CHRIS MARTIN
B
esides your standard-
issue new-season excite-
ment of a refreshed title
fight and reshuffled roster, the
2022 Progressive American
Flat track opener promised an
additional layer of intrigue as
the season got underway during
Daytona Bike Week at Volusia
Speedway Park.
In fact, the much-debated
rulebook changes meant to level
the Mission SuperTwins playing
field had been the sport's pri-
mary story over the winter, and
the Volusia Half-Mile presented
the first opportunity to prove
them in practice.
And while it's important to
not put too much stock into the
small sample size of a single
event—especially considering
other factors at play, such as
thunderstorm-saturated condi-
tions at a track that already
proved to have outlier potential
by playing host to one of only
two non-Indian oval track podi-
ums all last season—the early
returns were startlingly effective.
Recently deposed Mission
SuperTwins Champion Briar Bau-
man made a point of thanking his
factory Indian Motorcycle squad
for all their good work in response
to the rule changes. Whatever
the ultimate impact proves to be,
the changes weren't enough to
prevent the talented and moti-
vated Bauman from leaving the
field in his wake in the opener
as he powered to a 20th career
premier-class victory aboard the
works Indian FTR750.
