Rainey To Ride A 500 Again! W ayne Rainey will be back in the seat of a Yamaha 500cc Grand Prix motorcycle for the first time since his life- changing accident when he rides his 1992 World Championship-winning Marlboro Yamaha at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, June 23-26. It will be the third time Rainey has ridden a motorcycle since his 1993 accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down, with the three-time World Champion first taking back to the track at a private day at Buttonwillow and then at a festival held at Suzuka, Japan in 2019. Rainey's 500 at Goodwood will be modified so everything can be controlled by hands with no need to use a conventional gearshift. "I'm incredibly excited to not only be attending my first Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, but to be riding my 1992 Yamaha YZR500 up the famous hill climb," Rainey said. "It's truly a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity and one that I just couldn't pass up. I want to thank the Yamaha Motor Company for preparing my 1992 YZR500 and adapting it for me to ride, MotoAmerica for helping make the entire project fly, and The Duke of Rich- mond for really making this a reality. I can't wait to meet the fans who come from all over the world for the Goodwood Festival of Speed." CN VOLUME 59 ISSUE 9 MARCH 1, 2022 P29 Wayne Rainey will be back in the saddle of this 1992 Marlboro Yamaha at Goodwood in June.
