LOOKING BACK
Graeme Crosby won the Daytona 200 40 years ago and was pictured
with Miss Winston on the cover. Freddie Spencer was second.
Spencer didn't leave the beach empty handed, though; he won the
Superbike 1000 ahead of Mike Baldwin. The Formula II win went
to Rich Schlachter, and Jimmy Adamo won Battle of the Twins...
Darrell Shultz won the Daytona Supercross for the second year in a
row... We featured an interview with Mike Baldwin who was hoping to
return to the 500cc Grand Prix Championship.
Yamaha-mounted Kent Howerton was pictured on the cover of Cycle
News 50 years ago. Richard Creed shot the photo from Lockart
Motocross in Texas. Our Honda XL250 test bike was also pictured on the
cover. We were excited about its single cylinder, four valves and five-speed
transmission. It sold for $850... We covered Evel Knievel's record-
breaking indoor jump at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He successfully
leaped over 15 cars but broke his ankle on the landing before "dumping"
the bike... We had coverage of the Viewfinders GP at Indian Dunes.
