50 Years Ago MARCH 14, 1972 P128 LOOKING BACK Graeme Crosby won the Daytona 200 40 years ago and was pictured with Miss Winston on the cover. Freddie Spencer was second. Spencer didn't leave the beach empty handed, though; he won the Superbike 1000 ahead of Mike Baldwin. The Formula II win went to Rich Schlachter, and Jimmy Adamo won Battle of the Twins... Darrell Shultz won the Daytona Supercross for the second year in a row... We featured an interview with Mike Baldwin who was hoping to return to the 500cc Grand Prix Championship. Yamaha-mounted Kent Howerton was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Richard Creed shot the photo from Lockart Motocross in Texas. Our Honda XL250 test bike was also pictured on the cover. We were excited about its single cylinder, four valves and five-speed transmission. It sold for $850... We covered Evel Knievel's record- breaking indoor jump at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He successfully leaped over 15 cars but broke his ankle on the landing before "dumping" the bike...
