LOOKING BACK
Our 1982 Suzuki DR500Z off-road test bike was pictured on the cover of
Cycle News 40 years ago. The big kickstart DR four-stroke weighed in at
282 pounds and sold for $2099... We featured a story on a motocross
track in Southern California. The story was titled The Rise, Fall and Rise
Again of Arroyo Cycle Park, known today as Glen Helen Raceway...
Donnie Hansen and Mark Barnett topped the Seattle Supercross
doubleheader... We had an interview with road racer Bruce Hammer,
who spoke about landing a big sponsor, Chevron.
We liked a photo of local motocrosser Terry McDonald squashing his
Triumph/Rickman while landing from a Lions MX jump so much that we
put in on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago... One of our featured
race coverages was the A.C.E. Grand Prix from Indian Dunes (Valencia,
California), where some of the motocross stars of the West came out
and played. Tom Rapp rode a Bultaco to the 125cc-class win, while Rex
Staten topped the 250cc class on a CZ. Jim Wilson outdueled Tim Hart
for the Senior-class victory.
