LOOKING BACK
Our Honda XR200R test bike was featured on the cover 40 years ago. We
said, "Owning the XR200R would be a pleasure, as it requires so little—yet
gives so much." The 222-pound thumper enduro bike retailed for $1548...
Brad Lackey, Johnny O'Mara and Rick Johnson were the big winners
at the CMC/Preston Petty Golden State MX Series at Carlsbad... Bob
Balentine was the SCORE Parker 400 winner on a Mugen-prepped Honda
XR500... Jay Springsteen won the Houston Short Track, tying Kenny
Roberts with 29 career Grand National wins; Ricky Graham won the TT.
Steve Stackable was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago.
Stackable and fellow Texan Kent Howerton battled for the 125cc win at
a local motocross in Lockhart, Texas. "The Stack" took the victory, and
he also won the Open Expert class on a BSA... In California, Terry Clark
out-dueled Kenny Zahrt in the 125cc class at Bay Mare Motocross... We
tested the $1399 Yamaha 650cc XS-2 street bike... 18-year-old Steve
Hernandez won the Yamaha Silver Cup flat track at the Cow Palace in
