CN III VOICES P18 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR "Good investigative journalism will always be key to telling the whole story." Where Have The Americans Gone? Perhaps it was just a cosmic alignment of the stars, but we once had a steady-flow of American racers crossing the pond. We also had lots of grassroots racing, both dirt and pavement, where club racers were able to step-up and compete on the National level. Often they were the competitors who filled the starting grids. Club races at Bridgehampton, Pocono, Loudon and Summit Point were often mini-Nationals. Gary Nixon and Fred Nix came out of the red clay of Oklahoma. You had your choice of maybe a dozen races a weekend in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indianapolis and other states. Purses are smaller, options are fewer and the expense is almost the same whether you are riding the pro circuit or just chasing a dream/itch. All the money from factories and promoters has done little to grow the sport or insure there will be riders in the future. Ernie Anderson Via the Internet More TV It used to be I could watch Supercross, AMA Motocross, AMA Road Racing, World Superbike and MotoGP all on the same channel (Speed). Not anymore. AMA Motocross is now on FuelTV and Comcast doesn't carry it. World Superbike and AMA Road Racing are now on channels I have to pay extra to get. MotoGP coverage is to the point where it seems like it is one lap of racing per every five laps of commercials. The whole thing sucks and thinking about it makes my head hurt. The only reason I had cable to begin with was for motorcycle racing. Cycle News is my only friend. Steven Hoelter Englewood, CO A Risk Too Far? Excuse me, Michael Scott ("A Risk Too Far," Issue 27, July 9), but Jorge Lorenzo showed exactly the reasons why these athletes should be allowed to race after "being able to climb off the operating table onto the hot seat." Paul Ward Durban, South Africa World Superbike TV I enjoyed reading Gordon Ritchie's interview with World Superbike director Daniel Carrera (Issue 26, July 2). I was disappointed, however, that there was no discussion of possible Internet-viewing subscriptions. MotoGP keeps moving forward, this year offering Do-ItYourself packages of multiple onscreen views and so forth, while on the World Superbike front... nothing. I wound up paying $10 a month to add BeIN Sports (which, I believe, only recently became available) to my Verizon FiOS package, but I would have pre- ferred to send that money Dorna's way - the way I do with a MotoGP subscription. Bill Pollack Niskayuna, NY Elbows? Scott Redding drug his elbow on Kevin Schwantz' Suzuki at Spa apparently and remarked [in the full transcript] that: "I don't think they did that in 500cc GP back in 1994." Well, he's partially right. It was the late 1980s that Jean-Phillipe Ruggia did it... on a 500! Funny how these new kids have made that riding style popular "again." Damon Moran Via the Internet Liking Briefly… I just wanted to give a little feedback about a section of Cycle News I find I am always drawn to first when reading reports of major competitions. The race reports generally do a complete job of describing the events of the day, but the Briefly section fills in those areas behind the scenes that most fans will never be able to access. It is a bit like being able to walk back to the racers motorhome or transport after the race and asking them for details of their performance. Good investigative journalism will always be key to telling the whole story. Thanks again. Dan Cather Los Alamos, NM Letters to the editor can be sent to voices@cyclenews.com.
