The event has moved from Griffith Park to the Rose Bowl to the Coliseum in past years to accommodate the increasingly larger numbers of riders who mark the yearly date as about the biggest biker party of the year. Also one of the mellowest, with bike traffic moving smoothly into and out of the event. Over three truckloads of toys were collected and handed ()ver to the good folk at the Salvation Army, which handles the distribution to the needy kids. It was a kick ,back day with plenty of bike ogling, tall tales and generosity where the real image of biking was evident for the television crews who filmed the event. The MMA Toy Run was a great day for all: the kids, the Salvation Army, the MMA and bikers in general. By Terry Rezek ROSAMOND, CA, DEC. 12 ~/ff~r;~n-all1 The track at Edwards Air Force Base provided clear, very cool weather, a long tight track and loamy sand that stayed moist through seven hours of racing. Unfortunately, the short hours this late in the year forced the shortening of some of the later motos. Rick Guilmette, riding for Rosamond Suzuki, grabbed the moto one holeshot and led the first wave of 125s. A.J. Whiting and Rodney Hughes were right behind. The 250s started about 30 seconds later, and Larry Baker popped his PJ I Yamaha out in front. Honda rider Brian Chereshkoff let Baker have the first two turns and then passed for the lead. Tamm Racing rider Mike Shoemaker was in very tightly at third. Whiting had his Answer Products Yamaha in front at the start of lap two followed by Guilmette, Jeff Stanford and Rosamond Suzuki rider Roger Hensley. Chereshkoff was stretchingout'his lead, but Shoemaker had gotten by Baker and was looking for Chereshkoff. Lap three found Hensley ahead of Stanford and Whiting ahead of everyone. There was no change in the 250cc ranks. Hensley rapidly closed the gap, and Whiting started the next lap with a shadow. Shoemaker was doing the same to Chereshkoff. Whiting began to dig out some reserve power. The pressure claimed one victim as Chereshkoff blew a berm and dropped back, letting Shoemaker blow by into the 250cc lead. Most riders were slowing noticeably in the second half of the race, but the leaders were maintaining a strong pace. Hensley tried to get past Whiting, but got the door slammed every time. Gary Bowman brought his O'Neal Suzuki up to third place, but was not able to get within striking distance of the two leaders. Shoemaker was in control of the 250cc lead and was keeping lapped riders between himself and Chereshkoff.
