ATA EI Trial De Espana Schreiber wins his sixth By Len Weed ORANGE, CA; DEC. 12 A baker's dozen 13th annual year-end American Trials Association fund raisers. The victory log now.reads: Bernie Schreiber 6, everybody else 7. LaCrescenta's pride and joy won five straight events, 1975 through 1979. After a two year absence in the .official results (because of foreign riding licenses), Schreiber posted a 12-point victory over runner-up Scott Head. After the morning loop the scores stood: Schreiber IS, Dwaine Walters 21, Head and Oli Thordarson 27. In the afternoon spectator sections, Schreiber and Head tied with six points apiece. Bernie scored a five, a one, and 13 cleans while Scott carded 10 cleans, a two, and four ones. (Last year, riding unofficially, Bernie underscored all riders handily by deaning his first 14 afternoon rides before fiving his final section.) Matt Pritchard (ATA number two) and Oli Thordarson (ATA number three) devised the five diabolical spectator treats. Each section was ridden three times. Again, as last year, thrc;e stadium-type sections were coupled with two outrageous natural terrain challenges. . Only Schreiber, Head, and Dwaine Walters (19) turned in scores under 20 in the afternoon. Dave Pyle was fourth best with a score of 30. Ten of the 18 finish.ers averaged more than three points a section. The 142 starters each re.ceived two cans of Kal-Gard lubricants at signup, then tackled the morning loop. A late start plus other delays abbreviated the morning trial to one loop for Experts and one and a half loops for everybody else. Inadequate course markings contributed to the time pr~blem. Some confusion over sections to be ridden by some classes consumed more time. The Experts' exhibition riding began shortly after I :30 p.m. . The biggest features of the three "stadiurn" sections was a vast number of earthmover tires, not to mention a . ride on a pole across a waterhole and another journey across and off the top of an equipment shed. The natural sections featured walls that had to be jumped off, and/or banzai'd down. The primary beneficiary of the year-end fund raiser trail was Dwaine Walters who again topped the Expert class in 1982. Dwaine, who finished sixth in the 1982 National series, rode the 1982 Italian world round earlier in the year with funds received from the 1981 trial. (From 1983 on, Experts will onl y be supported once wi th raffle funds.) Dwaine finished third on the day, 21 points ahead of Dave Pyle (SWM). Oli Thordarson (Mon) took fifth. Mark Lewis (SWM) topped the Amateurs by 10 points. Erik Soderquist (Fan) finished second. (Erik was voted the 1982 Jim Wilson Award in recognition of his all-around sportsmanship, performance,. and integrity. ) Kevin Norton (hj) edged V.O.T.E. president-elect Reynold Hicklin (Fan) on cleans in the Novice class. (Hicklin tied with clubmate Howard Phelps for most Novice points in 1982.) Reece Fesler topped Andrew Parker for third on ones. Tim Aspy (Hon) thumped home a six point winner in Beginners. 1982 point leader John Stewart (Yam) edged Stuart Ebert (Bul) for second by two points. John Husmann (Mon) scored a 15point triumph in Senior-A over Gil Smith and Tom Hascher. Gil (1982 ATA number one) beat Tom for second on ones. Jerry Wiencek (Bul) was a five point winner in Senior-N over Ron Stevens (Fan). Gary Stewart, tops in points for the year, finished third. The Senior-B victory was decided on cleans. Lou Gleason (Mon) got the nOd over Maurice Fracker (Bul). In the Press class, the free lancers underscored the staffers. Len Weed scored a 13 point victory over David Dewhurst. Charles Morey (Dirt Rider) nosed his Honda XR200 home ahead of Cycle Guide's Ron Lawson, who was testing the new Can-Am trailer. A brand new 350 Bultaco Sherpa, donated by Bultaco International, kept everyone waiting around after the trial. Christopher Butler, a Novice competitor from Anaheim, won the bike. Chris popped for 25 tickets at signup. After dispencing the raffle prizes, the ATA announced John Grace of Bultaco International and Fred Belair as co-recipients of the inaugural Ron Sprayberry Award. Before his death, Ron organized trials riding in Kern County. His efforts also led to the introduction of motorcycle education courses in the Bakersfield school curriculum. The Ron Sprayberry Award will be presented annually by the ATA to those who have unselfishly given of their time and expertise to further the sport. John Grace has supported EI Trial de Espana and its goal of sending top SoCaI riders overseas by annually donating a bike as top raffle prize. Fred Belair originated EI Trial de Espana in 1970 and continued to organize the event for several years thereafter. • Resu~ts EX: 1. Bernie Schreiber (SWM) 21; 2. Scott Head (Itj) 33; 3.
