JIM BELTINCK Orange, CA Big Mistake Well, it looks like the Irvine Company is going to close Orange County International Raceway in January. OCIR is, as mostof us know, the only remaining drag strip in southern California. . Wh~t the Irvine Company is doing IS optmg not to renew the lease, saying the property is more valuable to the community for uses that are indicated in' the general plans for the area. What that means is that they're going to put an industrial complex down right on top of the drag strip. More valuable to the community? I think they're making a big mistake. I feel OCIR is very valuable to the community. Maybe the Irvine Company doesn't realize that they have grudge racing every Wednesday night, high school racing every weekend during the school year, and additional grudge racing on weekends when there isn't a major race. This gives kids with hot bikes and cars a chance to race under race conditions, not on the streets where they could kill someone. The Irvine Company says people are complaining about the noise, but the track operator says he would spend up to $200,000 in sound walls (that have cured the problem in England) if the lrvine folh would renew the lease. There are a lot of racers like myself who put all their spare time and money into their race vehicles, and I don't know where we will.go if they close OCIR. Drag racers are a fine gro.up of people and don't give up easl.ly. Please don't let it happen get mvolved, and be willing to let the Irvine Company know that you val ue OCIR. Show them that there's plenty of demand for a_ local drag racing facility. Call or write the Irvine Company, 555 ewport Center Dr., Newport Beach, CJ\ 92660,714/7202070. Keep the legend alivel So many years ago - I can't recall exactly - a great event became a yearly must. In fact, the organization of many desert clubs was the result of this event. Barstow to Vegas was my first race, what an experience! Now the race seems to be a yearly function that we all must consider attending. The De~rt Turtles Motorcycle Club was a ~ect result of this race. Although th IS cl ub was never as large as some, it left a mark that many remember. I would like to hear from all those past members with tbe hope that we c~uld. once .again get together. My wl~h IS not to reform the club, it is to gam support for the San Gabriel Motorcycle Club and their effort to hold the 1983 Barstow to Vegas Hare and Hound. . Anyone interested in this reunion should contact meat Blue Water R.V. Center in Lake Havasu City, AZ. The phone number is 602/855-6350. I will return all letters and or phone calls.
