In the closest-ever balloting in
the five year history of the Cycle
News/West Rider of the Year,
freckle-faced speedster Danny
"Magoo" Chandler of Foresthill,
CA edged SOOcc World
Champion Brad Lackey to win
the 1982 award. The vote count
between the two world-elass
motocrossers ran nearly dead
even from the time the CN offices started receiving them right
up to the last day. Reader's
cited, Magoo's wins at the
Carlsbad USGP and The Superbikers, along with his unprecedented four-moto sweep of the
MX and Trophee des Nations
events. Those voting for Magoo
made comments like, "No one
expected this rider to do as well
as he did. A hard riding competitor and marvelous showman." "He makes 'berserk' riding look smooth and easy and
he just may be the fastest dirt
rider in the Cosmos." "Totally
awesome...pushes himself to
the outer limits of space!" "Such
a thrill for the sport!"
Indeed, we offer our congratulations to Danny, and to
Brad for such a close contest.
Other'riders who fared very well
in RoY balloting were 1982
250Cc World MX Champ Danny
LaPorte, '82 Grand National
Champ Ricky Graham, and
250cc National MX and Supercross Champ Donnie Hansen.
Such ci great year for American
motorcycle talent!
