TEN YEARS AGO Art Friedman expressed his opinions in a comparison of the first RD250 with the DS-7 of the previous year. Kent Howerton was not a surprise winner in a San Antonio motocross. His Yamaha was futily chased by Mark Baldre and Sam Finger. In other action, John Webb won the 1OOcc Junior class over Roger Brown. Steve Wise and Keith Duffy staged a Penton versus CZ battle in the 200cc class. The minibike champ was Steve Storbeck. The track announced a $500 match race for any rider who could defeat Howerton. Tom Brooks took another overall win in the desert on his giant-killer DKW, but his l25ccclassnumberone plate was still in doubt for the year. Jim Fishback, who had switched from motocross 10 months earlier, sewed up his number one 250cc class plate up with his finish. He took the plate away from another rider who won the number one plate in his first y~ar in the desert after a motocross career, Larry Pfutzenreuter. Larry Roeseler switched from the trail bike class to a 250 CZ. As was the custom, he dropped to the Amateur class, where he won. The Senior GP classes at a Riverside road race showed Whitney Blakeslee in the l75cc GP class win column. Jim Evans took the 250 and 350cc GP classes. He topped Wes Cooley and Jerry Green in the 250cc class and Don Vesco and Kevin Stafford in the 350s. Gerhard Klemm topped the Open GP class over Lee Fleming and Rance Bruce. Klemm was Nortonmounted. Perennial Bultaco aces, Tom .Rapp and Kenny larht, and Denny McFarland went 1-2-3 at an American Motocross Enterprises motOcross at Indian Dunes. There was a full complement of Sportsman including Greg Hogan, whose Penton topped the Yamahas of Russell Ingram and Jim Conlin in the l25cc Beginner class. The Johnny Mantz Memorial West Coast Class A Speedway Championship was Bast news for the competition. The Bast brothers, Steve and Mike, swapped the lead for most of the day, ending the final event tied. A rurl-off gave the win to Mike, despite riding with an injured tongue from an earlier fall. A second tie had to be settled between Mike Konle and Don Cullum for third. Mike won the event, making the winning Podium trio identical to the one at the State Championships held earlier. John "Cowboy" Brower, wi th the aid of brother Billy and lady motocrosser Debbie Lawler, put on a "Motorcycle Daredevil Stunt Show" in Arizona. The cowboy crashed through walls of fire and the lovely lass jumped 75 feet, ramp to ramp, to set a jumping record for girls. '.
