Photo by Patrick Behar. . Moulton named AMA racing director WESTERVILLE, OH,DEC. 10 Wayne L. Moulton has been selected as director of professional competiti~n for the American Motorcyclist Association, according to AMA Executive Director Ed Youngblood. Moulton, who has resigned his position as president of Triumph Motorcycles America, Inc., in order to take the AMA post, will assume his new responsibilities as of Jan. 1, 1983. Working from AMA's WesterviUe, Ohio, headquarters, he wi1l direct all aspects of AMA's professional racing programs. In announcing the appointment, Youngblood said, "We are pleased to have chosen an individual with extensive experience in motorcycling, including a knowledge of the industry, engineering. and motorcycle racing. This background, in combination with his understanding'of the AMA, makes Wayne uniquely qualified for the demanding job" Moulton has served as an AMA trustee, has been a member of its competition committee, and is a life member of the association. Moulton, 50, hai been in the motorcycle industry almost 30 years, beginning al a Triumph dealer in Utah. He has held positions with Johnson Motors (former western U.S. Triumph distributors), Kawasaki and Vetter before taking his most recent post at Triumph in 1979. In a Supercross race held in Italy Dec. II, Honda's Danny "Magoo" Chandler traded event wins with former MX World Champ Georges Jobe (Suz). J obe won the 250cc class over Chandler, with current 250cc World Champ Danny LaPorte (Yam) sixth. Chandler won the I 25cc class over Jean-Claude Lacquaye and Jobe. LaPorte took a 10th in that one. Kevin Welch (Mai) won the Nevada State Championship Hare Scrambles Dec. 12, but the runner-up finish of Maico pilot Anthony Pasqualotto earned him the number one plate. The other title contender, Jack Johnson (Mai), DNF this final event. Out in the California desert, the Jackrabbits' hare 'n' hound went to O'Neal/Honda rider Chuck Stearns. Amateur Tom Willis and Larry Roeseier finished second and third, both riding Husqvarnas: At fourth overall, Howard McCasland (Hon) was first 250cc. 2 Americans Dennis Sigalos and Bobby Schwartz absolutely swept through the Dec. 11 World Best Pairs Speedway Championship in Sydney, Australia. The duo finished 1-2 in each of their six races for a 30-point maximum score. English- . men Phil Collins and Kenny Carter finished second with 22 points. This is the second year Americans have taken the Best Pairs title; last year Schwartz and Bruce Penhall captured the crown for the first time in Poland. This also gives Americans all three major speedway titles: World Individual, World Team Cup, and Best Pairs. Rocky Cycle announced that Chris' Carter, 31, has been promoted to western regional sales manager. The former ISDT gold medalist will be responsible for coordinating the efforts to Rocky salesmen in 19 states. James E. Yehl, president of Jones Optical Co., has announced that Fred Watkins has joined the conwany in the position of national sales manger/motorcycle. Watkins is wellknown in the motorcycle industry, having had his own distribution company in the Pacific Northwest, and more recently as sales manager for Scott USA. Brad Lackey was honored by the Richmond Ramblers M.C. in one of their recent meetings. "Bad Brad" was presented a number one plate by a legend in his own right, Dick Mann. This was the second time Lackey has been honored by the club, which made him an honorary member after he won the 1972 500cc National MX Championship. A couple of missing bits from an ad we've been running on the On Any Sunday II video cassettes. Representatives from AMA, motocross and Supercross promoters, and most of the major manufacturers met in California to work on the establishment of a motocross board as called for by the promoters. While the exact board was not set up, incoming AMA racing director Wayne Moulton said, "It's something that can be worked out in the next 10 days." The 1983 Wrangler Super Series was also changed to improve travel requirements and to shorten the season, which will now end Aug. 28. (For the new schedule, please see p. 20.) The month of September sees nothing on the motocross calendar to allow for a Trophee and Motocross des Nations effort. October looks like it will be the beginning of some sort of west coast series, with two Supercross and three outdoor events in the works. Larry "Supermouth" Huffman is currently organizing a syndicated half-hOur TV series, called Motor- cycle World WIth Larry Huffman. Scheduled to begin next February with a satellite feed to cable and VHF stations, Huffman's show results and point standings from the competition of the previous weekend, interviews, how-to-ride and mechanical tips, and other features of interest to motorcyclists. Plans call for a 13-week series, and stations already signed up include KUSI (San Diego), KDOC (Orange County) and WDBO (Orlando, FL), and advertising spots are already coming in. Terry' Varner, from LOP Racing, called to say that young Arizona Pro Billy Dalton is riding for LOP in the Arizona area. Billy, known locally as "The Bullet," led this year's Bosch Classic. "1 definitely won't be with Suzuki next year," says multi drag race title holder Terry Vance. "It's a matter of budget problems; that's all there is to it. I'm really sad; Suzuki has done a lot for me." ,Vance is currently talking to others about a 1983 program. The Bruce Hammer benefit poker run that will be held Jan. 2, 1983 out near California City has already drawn product contributions from Bell Helmets, Kal-Gard, Yoshimura and Yamaha. One of our normally sharp-eyed ad types across the hall made a slight error in last week's issue. The T&.O . Yamaha ad should have read 15% off any accessory purchase over $25, not just any purchase over $25. The normally sharp-eyed keeper of this column also missed a couple last week.
