Lucerne Valley - Reel Mountain-.:.-Plaster city -: Searchlight:': Sidewinder Road NOW AVAILABLE ON VIDEO CASSETTE Desert Hotline Stearns grabs SGVMC EuroScrams By Shirley Upp BARSTOW, CA, NOV. 27 Chuck Stearns and his mighty Honda went wild again this weekend just south of Barstow as this well matched team-took another overall win in the Open class of the San Gabriel Valley M.C.'s European Scrambles. The first race, for Seniors, was a thriller for the spectators as they watched Dave Kersting on his 175 Kawasaki take the lead on the second lap after Al Guzman had seized. Charlie Goodban, a 250cc rider, pushed Kersting hard for a couple laps UI1tii he got a flat. Lawrence Nicholson was running first Open and third overall. Sterling Varner, at fourth overall, had the 250cc Amateur class for the day. Charles Sims was leading the Novice class. Taking the checkered first was hard riding _Kersting with his very first overall win. Second was Nicholson, third went to Varner and Goodban hung in for a first in the 250cc Expert class. The second race was the Open class and it belonged to a hot Stearns. Stearns took the lead on the first lap and for five very very fast laps he relentlessly kept his Honda to the max. Stearns wanted to thank American Honda, Gold Belt and Bel-Ray. Dan Smith (Hus) pulled up within striking distance but got a flat and had to settle for second. Smith wanted to thank his sponsors Kern Sportcycle, Malcolm Smith and Richter. Dan Ashcraft (Hus) took third with Bruce Ogilvie in at fourth. First Open Amateur was Tom Willis at fifth followed by Chris Crandall. The third race was the hot 250cc class. Amateur Scott Stearns jumped in the lead off the line. Then it was Dan Ashcraft (Hus) leading until he developed transmission troubles. Chuck Miller had recovered from a bad start and was working his way up through the dust and was there to take over the lead. Ed Pierce held second place for two laps until he had problems. At the finish it was Miller (Hon) who wanted to thank Bruce Ogilvie for the loan of a bike which made his ride possible today. Dale Connors took a well earned second. Third and fourth were Bob Bauman and Mike Fitzgerald. Jim Bringhurst took the first in the Vet class today. And it was Scott Stearns taking first Amateur. Racenumberfour, the 200cc event, was won by Kevin Hopkins (Hon). By the second lap Brett Howell (Hon) had moved into second after Paul Palmer dropped out. Tom Elias was having trouble with a flat but didn't give in and was in third spot. The last race was the Sidehack race with the team of Les Ketcham Sr. and Les Ketcham Jr. taking the overall. Randy and Dale Jordan had the lead for awhile but try as they might to fight off the charging Ketchams, they couldn't. Over on the Novice/Beginner course the first race of the day belonged to the women. And this was another triumph for Lori Farmer and her Honda. The Open Novice/Beginner race went to speedster Jim Bryant, who never once slacked off and when his ride ended he took home the overall honors. The third race was the 250cc class. Troy Sawafford had a great race tQday, grabbing the lead and holding it for the entire four laps. The 200cc race was a walkaway for Tony Stuart. Tony had an almost unbelievable lead over second place. Harden tops Silver Dust 400 By Wayne Gales THE GREATEST MOAPA, NV, NOV. 20 MOTORCYCLE Factory Husqvarna ace Scot Harden moved back into the winner's circle after a bit of a dry spell to take the overall win in the premier running of the Silver Dust 400 off-road race. Harden ironmanned his Husqvarna/Valley Plastering/Motorcycle Tire Center-sponsored 500XC Husky around the 388mile course that stretched from Moapa to just south of Pioche and back, in seven hours, seven minutes and 33 seconds, for a remarkable average speed of over 54 mph. This was inspite of a dismal start that saw Scot leave the start line nearly 25 minutes late due to a rear flat. As the event started shortly after dawn, it was Crockett Writhlin taking advantage of an early start time to take the lead for the first 120 miles into Caliente. A week of intermittent snow and rain had left parts of the course a bog, especially up in the mountains south of the town. Although the morning had dawned clear and cold at the start line, clouds gathered quickly to the north and it soon began to rain and then snow. "You couldn't see more than 100 feet in some places," remarked Casey Folks, who pulled into Caliente hot on Wirthlin's tail and neck and neck with son Daryl on his Sportsman Cycle/Ditch Witch Husky 125. Wirthlin and partner were ham~ pered with tire problems and frozen brakes and left the pits with only a slim lead. Casey turned his Class 38 Husky over to partner Max Switzer and Daryl handed his machine over to teammate Scott Morris. Harden pulled into Caliente in fourth, having made up all. of his time loss from his tire woes. After gas, he pulled out of town and into the snowstorm, overtaking' the leaders a few miles later, never to be challenged again. Next into Caliente was Ken Bryan, who, also suffering from frozen brakes, crashed his way down the mountain leading into town. Next into the pits was the Montclair Yamaha 125 of Oren Beck and Darin Cartright, hot in pursuit ' of the Folks/Morris team. At the road crossing near Pioche, it was Harden, now building a comfortable lead in front, with Morris now holding second overall and Max Switzer cruising in third. Beck had moved into fourth overall and was closing on the 125 Husky on time. As the riders headed down the final stretch, it was still Harden pulling away to the finish. The Folks/Morris Husky still led the Beck/Cartright Yamaha physically, but the last part of the course consisted primarily of high speed roads, and although the California team never physically caught the local boys, they kept close enough to take the 125cc victory by time. See-ond place in the Open class was the Wirthlin/McCall team, while Casey Folks and Max Switzer took _ their second major victory in less than a month in Class 38.
