The King of the Concrete Speedway race, run Dec. 3 in the Long Beach Arena, saw Buddy Robinson come out of the final event as the evening's winner. Robinson led all scorers at the end of 20 regulation events, and the top four riders then went into a final event. Robinson won it, followed by Mike Curoso, John Sandona and Mike Bast. MX dispute settled; AMA and Honda shake hands DALLAS,TX,NOV.29 The 1983 AMA unctioned Wrangler Super Series MX program was made official after lengthy discussions led to the signing of AMA unction contracts by nearly all of the Supercro.. and outdoor National Championship MX promoters holding dates on the '83 schedule. The signing of AMA contracts and the subsequent announcement of the official series followed word that the AMA and Honda had reached a settlement on November 29 'Concerning anti-trust litigation between the two parties, according to AMA Board of Trustees member John Hasty. Suzuki is also reportedly nearing a settlement with the AMA. As for Vamaha, the third manufacturer named in the anti-trust suit, AMA executive director Ed Voungblood uid, "Frankly, I don't know where we stand at the minute as far as Vamaha is concerned." Hasty concurred and added, "I haven't been able to get beyond Ken Clark (Vamaha's racing manager)." The announcement of the Wrangler Super Series was made by the newly formed AMA Professional MX Racing Board, a group of five promoters who will establish guidelines and formats for AMA unctioned professionatmotocross. Pace Management's C.E. Altman was named chairman of the new board and will represent Supercross promoters as will Daytona International Speedway's Jim France. Carlsbad USGP promoter Gavin Trippe will be the GP promoters' representative on the board, while Bill West and Dave Coombs will speak for the outdoor National Championship promoters. Alternate board members are Stadium Motorsports' Mike Goodwin, Unadilla USGP promoter Ward Robinson, and Bob Osborn, promoter of the Washougal, WAr outdoor National. The Wrangler Super Series will feature new formats in both Nationaland Supercross competition. 125,250 and 500cc classes will compete at each outdoor National. Each class will run two 30minute plus two lap motos. The Wrangler Super Series Champion will be picked from points accumulated through Supercrossand any one of the National classes. The new Supercross format will start with a 60 rider field. Four heats, two semis, two quarter-finals, and a last chance qualifier will determine the riders in the 18 man final. The new format will have the top riders competing in three races at each Supercross event, instead of in two races as in past seasons. The 32 event series will feature a $100,000 Wrangler point fund for the top 15 riders, using combined point totals from both Supercross and outdoor National performances. In addition, a $3,000 mechanics' point fund and a Rookie of the Vear program will also be featured. "The Wrangler Brand is extremely pleased that we will continue to be involved in one of the most exciting and fastest growing forms of motorsports in the world," uid Bob Janelle, Wrangler's Super Series manager. "The AMA and the new board spent many long hours working out the details for the new series which we feel will launch the sport of professional motocross into a new era. " The tentative '83 Wrangler Super Series schedule is on p. 28. 2 Harley-Davidson presented its testimony to the International Trade Commission on Nov. 30. Harley-Davidson is asking the ITC to impose temporary tariffs on Japanese motorcycles, of which H-D claims an "excessive inventory (will lead to) an aU-out price war which will destroy the American market." Vaughn ,tIeals, chairman and chief executive otficer of Harley-Davidson, testified on behalf of the Milwaukee, WI, manufacturer, as did U.S. Senators William Proxmire and Robert Kasten. HosPITal STOP: Off-road ace Dan Ashcraft got off at the Toys for Tots GP in Adelanto, sustaining a broken ankle in the incident. The Riverside County Board of Supervisors will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 14, to continue the public hearing on the proposed DeAnza Cycle Park project. Recent opposition to the $7.2-million. three-year project has stalled the Board's decision on accepting the Environmental Impact Report and the General Development Plan. Petitions in favor of this needed OHV park can be signed at m'ost Riverside County motorcycle shops. The hearing, which will be held on the 14th floor of the County Administration Building, 14th and Lemon Sts., is open to the public. The RUII Darnell Motocross School scheduled for Dec. 20-21 at Argyll Park in Dixon, CAr has been rescheduled for Dec. 27-28 at the ume location. Southern California motorcyclists interested in a career in motorcycle repair should consider the tuitionfree program offered by the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Track 'n' Travel, a southern California dealer for Maico and KTM, will have a booth and a display of their motorcycles on Dec: 11 at the site of the California Racing Club's Santa Claus enduro, which will be held the following day. As the California Superbike School enters its fourth year, Keith Code tells that road race fans will be able to enter the school after every roed race National, except for the yet-to-be-confirmed Daytona school. Those tracks are Mid-Ohio, Road America. Loudon, Pocono, Brainerd, Laguna Seca arid Sears Point. In addition, the regular program continues at Riverside, laguna Seca and Willow Springs. CSS also hopes to follow each AMA Pro-Am race with a school, but the schedule for the Pro-Ams is not yet available. Kerry Bryant called to say that it was Performance Machine that should have been listed as one of his sponsors in the coverage of the Budweiser Superbike event that ran last week. The top placing Yamahamounted privateer in the 125, 250 and 500cc Pro final standings of each ser· ies will receive the use of two YZs of the appropriate category and a $1000 parts credit for 1983. This is part of the Yamaha Competition Support program, and of course factory and Pro Support riders are ineligible. In addition, the Yamaha Technical Assistance Team will att~nd all events at both series. Ultimate Products, which has just come on the market with a new motocross apparel line, is'looking for riders to sponsor in 1983. Off-road ace Tom Kelly joined the ranks of married men when he wedded his lady friend of the past two and a half years. Meg, on Thanksgiving Day. The Kellys will continue to reside in the desert town of Mojave, and Tom is currently working on his '83 racing program. Simpson Sports has posted over $8400 in contingencies for the 1983 CMC Golden State Series. The contingencies range from helmets for Simpson-wearing Mini expert and 125, 250 and 500cc Intermediate series winners, to per event cash for Pros. A Pro rider with a Simpson helmet (logo prominently displayed) can take home $250 for a win, $100 for second, $50 for third, or $50 for being top Simpson finisher.
