Charles Wertz took the 250cc win at the CRC Bandito GP.

. for second with' Earhart in for third..
The half mile Money go saw Hames
back on top; he went wire to wire in
both the 250cc and Open. It was
Roger Thompson, however, that was
right behind him looking for the
mistake that never came. Dave Ehrhart
was third in the 250cc and Larry Earhart was third in the Open.
The cream of the crop was on hand
for the Open Amateur classes, and
they provided some very interesting
races.
In the TT, Dave AlexaQder got off
first with Bob Graves in second and
Wheelsmith-sponsored Thad Wolff
in third. Graves took over the lead on
the third lap, but it was short-lived as
he made a mistake· and ended up
shaking hands with terra firma. Alexander was more than happy to reclaim
the front position and there he stayed
to the end. Nigel Gale was second
with Pat McCann third.
The half mile saw Thad Wolff go
wire to wire. Bob Graves had a great
start and was really going for it, but
went in too hot in turn three and
ended up watching the rest of the
field go by. Nigel Gale picked up his
second second of the night and Pat
McCann got his second third.
Mark Bailey collected two wins for
his night work as he won both Novice
goes. Dave Pierce and Tom Arnold
shared the second and third spots on
the TT while Joe Winston and Todd
Kissinger shared the plac~/
show spots on the half mile.

Bandito GP
By Terry Rezek
ORANGE, CA, NOV. 14
The first race of the day at t.he
California Racing Club's
Bandito Grand Prix went to
the Minis and the first win to
Jeff Barbacovi, who jumped to an
immediate lead and took off to stretch
out that lead w'ith no real challenge.
While Barbacovi was racing for the
flag, a good battle developed f9r
second between Scott Murphy and
Ron Jordan. This fight went on into
the second half of the race when
Murphy and Jordan were joined by
Todd Hayes. Hayes worked his way
past the other two and took second,
and the battle' for second became a
battle for third. Murphy won that
spot.
The 0-200cc, Amateur/Novice/Beginner event started with the Amateurs and the Novices on the same
line. That made for an interesting
start, and Rich Truchinski got the .
holeshot. As they came around the
first three or four turns, Brian Felix, a
100cc Novice, was right on Truchinski's rear fender. Experience and
horsepower were in Truchinski's
favor, and he began pulling away from
Felix and the rest by the end of lap

First to last, just that fast!
Out of that melee came Charlie
Wertz in the lead and Mike Vrchota
an intimate second. They went that
way for a few laps whenVrchota
decided to try the lead for a while.
Wertz didn't like that at all and went
back to first· by lap six, proceeding
from there to open a good lead. Dean
Kassel and Bill Chapin started the
race in a fight for third and continued
that way for seven laps. Vrchola be.came handicapped at this point, with
what appeared from a distance to be a
flat tire, and Kassel moved. up to
second. Realizing that Vrchota was
no longer on his back, Wertz seemed
to relax a little and Kassel began
creeping up. When both riders got
the white flag, Kassel began a finishing kick that nearly caught Wertz
napping. It went down to a 10 foot
difference at the finish line after 45
minutes of racing. Whew!
Bill Millar began the Veterans and
Seniors' race in his usual dominating
fashion, grabbing a first turn lead.
And, as usual, his closest competitors
were Bill Saltzman and Dan Moore.
The three of them were cheek to jowl
for three laps when Moore went over
the bars and landed very hard, finishing the race with a fast trip to the
hospital. The Millar-Saltzman fracas
continued unabated throughout the
race. Saltzman took the lead for two
laps right after the halfway sign, but
Millar was soon back in the lead.
From there to the last lap, Saltzman
was never more than two seconds
behind Millar. Somewhere on the
backside of the course things were
happening, and Saltzman finished
the race in an easy first with Millar
nowhere in sight.
Late word is that although Dan
Moore's injuries were quite serious,
he is recovering and should be home
by the time this sees print. If you
should want to send encouraging
words, cards or letters, they may be
sent in care of CRC, 24518 Island,
Carson, CA 90745.

Hagi triples in
Hawaiian

Threatening skies opened up
after intermission tonight to
rain out the second half of the
Friday night Hawaii Raceway.
Park TT program. Only the Mini
class was able to run both motos as
the 125cc Support class started in a
drizzle and ended in a downpour.
The 125s had to restart once due to
treacherous traction taking its toll on
the troops, and even then the first
gear, flat foot ski-style wheelspinners
looked like a bunch of drunks on the
bunny slopes. Even the flagman fell
trying to red flag the racers in the zero
visibility.
When it became obvious 'the weather
wouldn't let up, trophies were awarded to the first moto finishing positions', and both heats of the 125cc
Support class scored trophies.

riders disappointed at the lack of a
second moto. Oman had just returned
from a naval assignment .a~ Pearl
Harbor, and quickly jumped into the
lead of the 250cc Support class. He let
Brian 'Ram around his holeshot for a
few corners, then repassed and led
until the white flag lap. Then as
'Oman caught up to a slower rider,
the rider wheelied in front of him.
BobbyJoe slowed to let the rider save
it; .the rider responded by crashing
right.in front of BobbyJoe, taking
them both out. First place and a
healthy lead right down the tubes as
Kam inherited the lead with a charging Neisha Kahoopii- right behind.
The Husky team of Eric Shamabuku
and Glenn Fukushima had shared
every pOsition from first .to fourth,
dicing with Brian as BobbyJoe led.
While Neisha worked his way up,
Eric got Glenn, Brian took the lead
and Neisha passed everybody on his
way to victory. The checkered order
was Kahoopii, Kam, Shimabuku and
Fukushima with BobbyJoe half a lap
back after the crash. . .
,
Scot Spencer battled his way to a
win in the 125cc A Support class,
working' his way around Herbert
Milliora who finished second. Joseph
Tabisola and Ivan Botelho were wheel
to fender freighttraining it as they
finished third and fourth.
Jace Furuike ran away with the B
heat victory, with Les Leong besting
a tough pair of Lore.n Hei4a' and
Kent Louie to finish second, third
and fourth .
Hagi Alexander styled his way to
firsts in all three Expert classes for the
second time in a row. The only battles were for second place, like in the
125s where Todd Tavares managed
to hold off a determined Mike
McGuire wire to wire for second.
place. A finish line banzai attempt by
McGuire, that came within a half a
knob, capped a super duel between
'these two hot racers.
In the 250cc Expert class, Dennis
Hethcote used a great start and outside pressure in the sweepers to stay
ahead of Terry Wood and McGuire.
Dennis stayed within sight of McGuire
for second as the Wood/McGuire act
played me and my shaflow enroute to
third and fourth.
Open Expert was another Hagi
holeshot runaway win. Jon Bratten
held second for a few laps, then- got
passed and left by Stu Whittingham
as they finished 1-2-3.
Mini Champion Blayne Soma was
dethroned by Roy Kiyabu, who took
advantage of Soma's slips in the slick
second moto- to edge Blayne in the
first place tie. Ronald Timbreza passed
Keith Daniels in the wet second moto
to take third place gold in a tie with
Keith, after losing to him the first
time around.
Sonny Salavea took the expected
Open Support win, but the next three
slots were up for grabs. Two of the
Fung brothers, Vance and Nyle, mixed
it up all the way, with Vance taking
second, but it was a steady Carl Dees
who snuck into third on a Nyle Fung
bobble and defended it successfully to
the checkered.
