'Chard'-charges to Pro wIn at DeAnza MJC By Kit Pelm.r SUNNYMEAD, CA, NOV. 21 It was a tough battle, but not too tough for Yamaha-mounted Richard "Chard" Hoffman to win the 250cc Pro class today at· DeAnza Cycle Park. Hoffman had to put up with some stiff competition with the likes of Suzuki of Riverside's Eddie Michetti (Suz) and Jon Friesen (Suz). At the start of moto one it was Michetti who shot into the lead while Hoffman and Friesen followed at a safe distance. While Michetti was enjoying a comfortable lead, Friesen began puttin$ heavy pressure on Hoffman. Dunng the next eight laps the Hoffman/Friesen duel tightened into an exciting dogfight. But near moto's end, Friesen began letting up, which gave Hoffman a little breathing room. Michetti went on to take the win while Hoffman, Friesen and Jerry Hensley (Suz) followed. Moto two looked to be another Michetti runaway, but Hoffman, who was closely following the leader in second, wasn't about to give up without a fight. So up front the two-began to set a hot pace while pulling away from the pack. Michetti and Hoffman never separated more than a few inches throughout the moto until the 14th lap, when Michetti took a hard tumble after his front wheel washed out. Hoffman then cruised to the overall victory ahead of Michetti and Friesen. In the Open Pro class it was Don Griewe (Hon) who was untouchable in both motos. In the first moto Griewe ran away with the easy win ahead of Greg Zitterkopf (Yam) and Keith Dysert (Hon). What was hoped would be a GriewelZitterkopf battle in moto two ended in only the second tum when Zitterkopf endoed hard while making his move on Griewe. The moto was restarted but, this time without the shaken-up Zitterkopf. Griewe again took the win ahead of Danny Sanchez (Hon) and Dysert. R.sults PEE WEE: 1.· Clifford Cook (Suz): 2. Gonzales super at CRC Dunescross By Lee Taylor Photo by G.reg Taylor VALENCIA, CA, NOV. 21 The I25cc Beginners took on a radically changed International Track at the California Racing Club's Indian Dunes motocross with more skill and style than most of the racers of the day. In their first mota the pack got off to a rowdy start, but managed to ease their way over the torturous stadium jumps. The whole track was a torture chamber for man and machine alike, yet cheered about by Mini and Pro riders. Brad Toms, riding for Kawasaki of Goleta, guided the pack over bridges, under bridges, through a rough section of whoops in the back section and back home again. From wire to wire, Toms held a tight rein in his bid for a ride at Anaheim Stadium in January. Behind Toms, eight riders got bogged down in the over-under section, but managed to untangle themselves and get on with the race. ";Blazin'" Bambino Tapia settled into the runner-up slot by mota's end with Banny Katz rounding out the top three. When th~ Beginners charged off for their fina.!. 'round,. .they~wett•.
