Angle takes CRC Iron Horse Enduro By Mike Klinger RED MOUNTAIN, CA, NOV. 14 You could not have asked for a better weekend! Remember the terrible rain we had a few weeks back? Well, the rain made it to the desert and made the entire desert one big magnificent playground. The topsoil was still moist and the weather conditions were unbeatable, which made this year's California Racing Club Iron Horse Enduro an event to remember. Red Mountain, known for its fierce uphills and rollercoaster downhills, played havoc on all the 400 riders entered. When all the scores were tallied, Everett Angle topped the event. Angle, a 250cc AA rider, posted a winning score of 1.121to edge Randy Daugherty (1.157) for the overall. Daughterty rode in the Open B class and this fine ride moved him to the A ranks from now on. All three loops started off Pipeline Rd., just north of the railroad tracks. Loop one dropped right into some pretty tricky boulder sections. For a couple of miles the riders tried to maintain a 24 mph average through very narrow, twisting-turning, rollercoaster terrain. For the two- and three-loop entrants there were no late points on loop one, so hitting check one right out of the rock section a couple of minutes off did not figure in their overall score. Loop one continued through the local hills and proved to be an easy warm up. Mini B rider Scott Collier was the. overall winner for the one loop entrants, losing 1.066. Just .002 behind Collier was Scott Bristol who also was a Mini B. Rounding out the top five were Sean Keast (Mini B), Johny McCarroll Jr. (Mini B) and Desiree Nikki Dion (Mini q. At 10 the first riders took off for loop two. The beginning of the loop was a super fast sandwash which led directly across Trona Rd. and dropped into the west basin of the course. Sneaking around in the foothills the .z • The Mistake Brake riders were ready to dive under the railroad tracks and on the other side of the underpass was a check. After this check the riders proceeded into what turned out to be loop's special test. It was 30 mph for 8.5 miles and proved to be challenging for most. Just before the check at the end of special test, an observation check was nestled atop a tall hill hoping to stop riders from cutting directly to the check. After leaving the hilly area it was a banzai scurry back to the pits and a known check. A 250cc Crider, John Bodnar, was the only zero score for the day, 0.023 for two loops. Following Bodnar by one full minute were Vet rider David Tew (1.033) and 200cc Crider Roben Ber (1.054). Darrell Norman, Bill Kuentz and Bob Manriquez tied for fifth, and seventh place was Don Lallier. As interesting as the first loop was, loop three used the first 20 miles of loop one but with much faster times. The boulder section in loop one ran at a 30 mph average on loop three and most of the AA and A riders were still zeroing the check. At the 20-mile marker, loop three proceeded over the railroad tracks and into some very tight switchbacks. The trail was so tight it was like trying to ride on a desk top and dodge rocks. Obviously at the end of this gem was the check that separated everyone from their zero scores. Angle and Daugherty scored the only one minute scores. Third went to Rich Daniel, a 250cc, AA who dropped 2.097 points. Then came Randy Kemp (250cc AA), a tie for fifth between Rick Arnold (Open A Vet) and Mike Garrett (250cc AA), Jamie Litton (250cc AA), Tom Cole (Open A Vet), Bob Keirns (Open AA) and James Bortree (Open A). Regular CRC stars Grant Palenske had a DNF on loop two, Tom Webb crushed four toes the day before and Bill Fulmer was a no show. This left the event wide open for all the other riders who seem to take a back seat to take three fine enduro aces. • Save yourself the expense of accidental over-revving.
