The official entry count for the fourth annual Barstow to Vegas Motorcycle Road Ride and Poker Run was 1584. That means that the Phantom Duck of the Desert Legal Defense Fund and the AMA Legislative Supporter Fund will each receive $2376. "Quaker" boxes located at the start and finish also brought the Duck an additional $294. Our thanks to all the riders who supported these two worthwhile causes. In addition, there was $42 in additional money for the Duck sent in with the mail entries to the event. And to top off a big weekend for Louis McKey, the Puget Sound Enduro Riders Association presented him with $50 on Saturday morning. Wheelie King Doug Domokos attempted to set a world recoid 100 mile wheelie from Baker, CA, to Las Vegas, NV, on Nov. 27. Domokos was riding a specially-prepared CR480R with a large gas tank and a harness to support himself. However, Doug reportedly ran into ignition troubles and DNF 8.3 miles into the ride. . The San Gabriel Valley Motorcycle Club's 0-37 Euro~ean Scrambles, held Nov. 27 near Barstow, saw Honda-mounted Chuck Stearns incr.... his win str..k to two with a victory in the Open class over Husky riders Dan Smith and Dan Ashcraft. Chuck Miller borrowed a Honda to win the 25000 race, while Kevin Hopkins was also Honda-mounted in his win in the Ughtweight Division II (175cc) event. Former National Trials Champion Marland Whaley is getting ready to tie the knot. We're. told he'll wed Debbie Gerig (Pro motocrosser David Gerig's sister) in San Diego on Dec. 18. Scot Harden (Hus) was the overall winner io the Gambler's 11 O-mile point to point Nevada State Championship Hare 'n' Hound in Nevada on Nov. 28. Jack Johnson finished ..cond on a 490 Maico, and Billy Hill was third on an RM 125 Suzuki. All three riders led during the race. The desert between Barstow and Les Vegas sewall kinds of machinery, and we meen all kinds. Example: this Vespe scooter. Yamaha teamsters Ricky Johnson and Broc Glover finished 1-2 in the Nov. 23 Tokyo Superbowl of Motocross. Riding '83 production YZ250s, Glover led the first 12 laps before Johnson got by to lead the remaining 13. Honda's David Bailey finished third, followed by Jeff Ward (Kaw), Ross Pederson (Hon) and Johnny O'Mara (Hon). A sellout crowd of 35,000 watched the event. 2 ufaeturer. We contacted someone close to the negotiations, and although he wouldn't talk on the record, he didn't deny that such was the case. So far, according to the reports, no ..ttlement offers have been accepted. A hearing requested by Suzuki on a motion to dismiss the lawsuit was scheduled for Nov. 29, but was continued by the court. While the AMA and the MX/Supercross promoters meet in Dallas as we go to press on Monday, Nov. 29, there are rumors floating about as to progress of the AMA vs. the manufacturers lawsuit ..ttlement talks. Reports sey that, while the original lawsuit was filed jointly against Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha, the AMA is ..t on individual_ttlements with each man- Word out of the AMAIpromoters meet,ing in Dallas, mentioned elsewhere on this page, is that AMA Board of Trustees treasurer John Hasty told promoters that, "Honda and the AMA have initiated action for a settlement of the lawsuit, and. negotiations. are underway with Suzuki." The meeting was still underway as our deadline came up, but as of presstime, there was no agreement betwt:eJl the two sides. The annual Sun GP is scheduled for Dec. 5 this year, but it will run at Canyon Raceway in Phoenix after difficul ties forced them to move from the traditional Phoenix International Raceway site. There will be a $1000 Pro purse, and Arizona hotshoes such as Chappy Blose and Jimmy Halford will battle Nevadans Kevin Welch and Chris Howard,-and Californians Bruce Ogilvie and Mike Sixbery. Canyon Raceway is located at 99th Ave. and Carefree Highway. In a Nov. 20 meeting, the California Desert Conservation Area's Multiple Use Advis9ry Council voted to recommend the Barstow to Vegas race route into the 1983 Desert Plan Ammendments. Distriet 37 is certainly optimistic a~ut the race's chances - they were ..lling "B-to-V '83" bumper stickers at the annual B-to-V protest trail ride. Southern California enduro timekeepers will have a cIJance to learn from one of the area's finest riders on Dec. II in Lucerne Valley, CA. Garner Palenske of Team Maico has sewn up four class championships and one overall championship between AMA arid CRC enduros in the last four years. The class should be beneficial to riders of all class levels and Palenske will be teaming up with MX coach Terry Nichols for additional tips on physical and mental conditioning, and bike preparation. The cost of the class is $6 for CRC members and $7 for all others. Group and family discounts will be available. '. ~ The Nationall\:lotorcycle Racing Association, the motorcycle branch of the National Hot Rod Association, has submitted a proposal to each of thejapanese manuklcturers. The proposal outlines an offer for an NMRAsanctioned 1983 motocross season, according to the NMRA. MX and Supercross promoters have been sent a letter in regards to the proposal. Judy Maely called to tell everyone to hurry in with those Christmas skid shoe orders, since she and husband Ken will be leaving Dec. 17 on their annual vacation. . Video cassettes of the movie On Any Sunday II, mentioned in this column several months ago, are finally available for sale. According to Joe Parkhurst, one of the partners in the busiĀ· ness, problems in obtaining blanktapes and then finding a facility to record them led to the delay. Initially, they're available by mail order from .RCR Enterprises, Inc., 9440 Santa Monica Blvd., Suite 604, Beverly Hills, CA 90210,213/273-2912. The price is $59.95 plus postage and handling, and the tapes are available in either VHS or Beta. ' Video cassettes of the original On An, $unda,willapparently not be available for some time. According to Parkhurst, the problem is with the estate of the late Steve McQueen, who co-produced and funded much of the film. More MXers at the drag strip: Baja 1000 co-winner Jack Johnson, who normally rides out of Vegas Cycle Center, took a brand new 490 Maico to the drag strip at Las Vegas Speedrome. Johnson then turned in what may be the fastest-ever time by an MX machine, 11.9 seconds at III mph. Johnson also ran a respectable 12.21 106 on an '82490 with a new pipe and port clean-up. Will we next see Pee Wee Gleason on a YZ490? The Space Shuttle won't be the only thing landing at Edwards Air Force Ba.. in the California de..rt. The California Racing Club will bold a motocross there oli Dec. 12. Over the paJt ..veral y..,., the Edwards track has only been used twice a year, and according to CRC, racer support may-determine if the track wiD see more racing.
