on the second lap.
Mark .Day rode off with the 500cc

Ward devastates
Woodland MX
By Brian Barnes
WOODLAND; WA, NOV. 6
Ka wasaki now has two Wards
instead of just the 125cc ~ation
al Jeff Ward. Larry Ward
(Kawasaki Team GreenlDGI
Jones Goggles), a twO time National
Minicyde champ, made the North.west's debut oftheawesome 198~ Kawasaki mini bike today at the Woodland
MX.
The water-cooled green monster
was untouchable in both motos, one
in dry conditions and the other
muddy. Ward won both motos easily
as he pulled away early and was never
challenged. His competition came
from Scott Rose (Yam), Oren Bray
(Yam) and Tommy Judge (Yam),
two riding 1983 Yamaha bikes. Beay
finished second overall after both
Judge and Rose DNF because of
mechanical problems.
With a small turnout of Pros on
hand, it was decided all would run
the same moto with staggered starts.
Gresham Suzuki rider Rowdy Blasdell blasted his lone Open bike off the
line first ahead of a four-rider quarterliter pack. Dave Hettinga (Yam), Jon
Buyas (Suz) and Tokland Kawasakimounted Gary Larson were one, two,
three in the 250cc Pro lineup at the
halfway point, but Larson managed
the win followed by Buyas, Curtis
Kerbaugh (Yam) and Hettinga.
Jim R. Anderson (Hood RiverCyde
Yam) swept the 125cc Pro first moto
followed by Powermasters Suzukimounted John Woodley. Grayson
Hart (Yam) was third.
In the second all Pro moLO, Buyas
gained first overall by staying a safe
distance ahead of Larson. Kerbaugh
was again third. The 125cc Pro class
had the same situation occur with
Woodley taking a second moto win
over Anderson and Hart to get the
overall.

Burgett outlasts
.Buyas at Mt. View
Moto-fun GP
By Brian Barnes
SANDY, OR, OCT. 31
The first race of this year's
Vanpon GP Moto-fun race series sponsored by A & W Rootbeer, got off the ground today
at Mt. View Cycle Park in Sandy,
Oregon.
The first annual series gives riders
a chance to compete on extended
courses with one and one-half motos
at Mt. View, Washougal, and Portland International Raceway tracks.
The 250cc class featured a battle
between Yamaha ace Rick Burgett
and Milwaukie Suzuki-mounted Jon
Buyas. With such long motos, most
riders pitted at least twice and others
chose new goggles when the time
arose. Burgett led early in the race
with Buyas not far behind. and when
Burgett LOok a pit stop. Buyas zoomed
by to take over the lead. Rick Wyler
(Kaw support/Bel-Ray) also got past
Burgett for awhile, but problems late
in the race kept the team green rider
from finishing. Gary Gump on a new
198~ Husky, Garrell Brown, Kyle
Hall (Hon) and Ronn Conn were all
close LOgether throughout the race.
Buyas' lead started to shrink after
Burgett's quick pit and a fall cost him.
precious time. Rick ended up passing
the Suzuki pilot taking the win ahead
of hard-charging Buyas, Gump,
Brown, Hall and Yamaha pilot Darryl Semmler.
Mike Chase outlasted Mike Stahl
and Rob Robinson in the 125cc Expert
class. AU three riders finished on the
same lap, but Chase stayed up froiH
for the win.
In the Open battle, Shoppert Logging Maico rider Lyle Shoppert held
Randy Thompson at bay the entire
contest.
Track owner Ron Long took the
30-40+ class with ease. His Suzuki 465
simply ate up the terrain, finishing
more than a lap ahead of his closest
competitors Larry Sause (Hon) and
Chuck Goodrich.
