Schumacher takes two in Kansas By Brad & Sharon Jones CHAPMAN, KS, NOV. 7 Beautiful 70 degree weather greeted racers and fans at the final Race Place II event, the Challenge of the Champions, A large crowd was on hand to watch the riders take on the winners of each class in the Race Place II Championship Series. Unfqrtunately the three Expert Champions were unable to attend. The I25cc Champ Tony Reynolds was out of action due to a broken wrist and 250cc Champ Mike Boston' suffered a broken ankle the weekend before the Challenge. Open Champ Jay Horn, a Maico dealer, was attending a dealers show to view the '83 models. The shortage of Expert champs did not create a shortage of Expert racing excitement. Several Nebraska riders came down for the event, including former top 10 national rider Gregg Theiss. Gregg pulled a clean holeshot off the line in moto one of the 125cc Expert class. John Lambert and Jeff Schumacher visibly outpowered Theiss to the first corner on their ultra-quick Yamahas. Schumacher went on LO take the win, with Lambert and Theiss close behind. MOLO two was a rerun of the first, except Theiss spent the moto working his way up to third after a poor start. Fourth overall went to Kevin Wolf, who just graduated from the I25cc Junior class and is looking like a real threat for next season. The 250cc Expert race began with John Lambert pulling a holeshot on his Metropolitan Yamaha. Don Wipf from Omaha pres ured John until Don hit a tire landing off a jump. Wipf was out for the day. Closing in next was Bobby Lowman, who slipped past John for an impressive win. Jeff Schumacher salvaged a third after a poor start. In Moto two, Schumacher took an early lead, only to have Lambert shoot past the first lap. Meanwhile, first moto winner Bobby Lowman was pushing his broken Kawasaki back to the pits. Back in fifth place, Steve Herschell was putting in an impressive ride. Steve recently married Linda Mefford, sister of Mini racer Butch Mefford, and probably had a little extra zip as his bride cheered him on. Before the race ended, the· lead switched back to Schumacher, giving him first overall. Lambert finished a streng second and Billie Cohee rode an excellent race to earn third overall. Brad Jones pulled a holeshot on his Horizon's Honda in the Open Expert class. On the third lap, Pete Watson and Kevin Dunham managed to pull past Jones. They battled closely till Watson fell and Jones slipped by for second. The second moLO start was a repeat of the first. This time Dunham crashed hard on the front doubles giving him a DNF. Watson pulled in for the win and first overall. Bryan Emig took wins in both Mini Expert and Mini Open on his new '83 Yamaha. Denny Stephenson from Omaha took both motos in Mini Juniors, with Cliff Poling taking second place honors. • Results JR CYC: 1. Derek Taylor; 2. Brian Watton; 3. Sean Parsons. MINI MINI: 1.
