·TEN EXPRESS YOURSELF WAY THE RIGHT YEARS AGO The Dirt Diggers' classic Hopetown GP played at the ex-movie set in Ventura County. Desert, motocross and flat track stars were on hand, and the mix best shown in the 500cc Expert class, where Triumph-mountedJohn Hateley bested Al Baker (Kaw) and Terry Bilton (Mai). Gene Cannady (Hon) was the 250cc Expert winner, Preston Petty used a Maico to take top 350cc Expert, and Bob Brooks rode a Carabela to reign supreme in the 125cc Experts. Desert ace Mitch Mayes (H-D pulled off the 100cc Expert win, but it was MXer Janene Pennington (Bul) picking up the Powder Puff win. The Trans-AMA MX Series held its sixth round at Phoenix, AZ, and the conclusion was roughly the same as what had previously transpired: Ake Jonsson (Mai) took the International class win, this time with a 1-3-1 tally. Husky's Heikki Mikkola was second with 2-1-2, followed by the 3-2-4 of Roger DeCoster (Suz). Brad Lackey (Kaw) was top American at seventh overall, with Yamaha's Jimmy Weinert turning in the next best performance at 12th. The final moto was also used as a tiebreaker in the 250cc Support class, where Husky-mounted Gary Semics' 3-1 bested the -1-3 of Kawasaki's Peter Lamppu. Fourteen-year-old Marland Whaley won the Masters class at an SDTR observed trials in Ramona, CA. Rich Delaney finished second to make it a 1-2 sweep for Montesa, with Mark Eggar bringing his Ossa home in third. A brother act was the featured act at a Las Vegas, NV, motocross. Younger brother Daryl Mason won the 125cc Expert class over Bobby Davidson, then watched brother Mark win the 250cc Expert class on a 175 Penton.
