Delligafta tops 250cc Intermediates at Saddleback By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA, ocr. 17 A recent fire scorched the hillsides throughout Irvine and burnt the back section of Saddleback, but missed the motocross track and didn't affect the scheduled events today. The Continental Motosports Corporation held their motocross program and some very fast Amateur and Pro riders were present - even though the TransCal Series was taking place at Sand Hill Ranch over the weekend. There is a weekly battle going on between 250cc Intermediate riders Pat DeIIigatta and Scott Slayton. Delligalta took his Whitti~r: Honda to the top honors, but during the motos he failed to take the holeshot and had to work by the others. Slayton shot out ahead in the first moto aboard his Yamaha with Delligatta right behind him. Delligatta h~s found that his key place to pass is on the downhill after the start and it was at that point that he zapped Slayton to take the lead. Steve Adamson came through in second and edged out Slayton at the end of the race. Randy Skinner took an average fifth place finish in the first molO but came back real strong in the final round. Skinner took the holeshot on his Suzuki, but his lead didn't last as he bailed on a corner at the back of the track. Terrin Keefer took pOor score in the first moto, but came into the final with a top position. He passed Delligatta to take over first while sailing over a double jump, actually landing on Delligatta. It wasn't long before Delligatta struck' back and regained the lead over Keefer, who placed second with Slayton taking third. Overall it was Delligatta with two firsts, Slayton winning second, Ken Campbell third with a pair of fourths and Steve Adamson placed fourth. DG Cycle of La Habra-sponsored Murray Shackelford took the lOp trophy in the large Mini Junior class. Murray didn't win either moto, but won 'the event with a consistent pair of seconds. Suzuki-mounted. Chad Smart had everything going for him in the opening moto and took the win over Shackelford, Tim Kosi and Steve Kendall. Taking a better start in the final molO, Kendall was leading with Karcher and Shackelford following. At this point, both Kendall and Shackelford would tie (points wise) if they were to hold their positions, but Kendall lost control of his Suzuki when he hit a rock and this caused him to go down. Karcher became the new leader with Shackelford and Steve Flanders taking second and third. Two seconds earned Shackelford the overall win ahead of Smart, Karcher and Hunt. The Pro classes were great with three two-man battles taking place. Rick Maki shot down Doug Dubach for the 125cc class win. Dubach had a hectic day with clutch problems in the first moto and then he ran over his foot in the final event. Dubach still managed second over Mike KelI. ~Ron Turner earnoothe 250cc class money after defeating Jeff Jennings. Turner made one mistake when he stalled his bike during the first moto and gave away the lead to Jennings. Turner's 2-1 still earned him the top money. The 500cc Pro class was a two man battle simply because there were only two riders. The Honda of Bob Casper took the overall with Jim Roy taking second. • a Results 80 JR: 1.
