Keyes comeback afCanyon By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, OCT. 31 Rincon Racing's Scott Keyes came back in style after weeks of recuperating from a fractured collarbone to take the 125cc 20 Amateur Stock class. The class was filled with comebacks, most notably Mark Lucas, who took second overall to Keyes, but won the Modified class easily, sans Keyes and Doug Butcher. "Butch" scored a 3-3 after a layoff of several months. It was all Keyes, Butch and Keith Watkins in the first moto start. Lucas slipped through the pack after his shaky start and, within a few laps began to push Butch for second. Keyes said before the race that the whoops were going to be a problem for him because of his shoulder and it was evident that they were during the race. Butch pulled 'up to him each time they hit the two sets on Canyon's long track, but Keyes stayed ahead by nailing it on the straights. As if trying to catch Keyes wasn't enough, Butch found Lucas breathing down his neck. After a few laps, Lucas gathered all of his Suzuki's power and passed Butch on the straight. Next, he set his sights on Keyes, but the leader just kept pulling away on the straights. But the whoops had been Keyes' problem the whole race and, with three laps to go, Lucas took the inside and Keyes the outside. Lucas then set the pace to the checkered. When the gate dropped for the second moto, Keyes made it there first again, this time with Dallas Brown behind. By lap two, Watkins and Lucas had gotten ahead of Brown and a few turns later Butch got him too. The only thing that changed duri~g the next couple of laps was the distance between the top four riders. By the midpoint of the race Butch had left Watkins to pick up hi's bike on the whoops and started to pressure Lucas. With two laps left, the Kawasaki rider blasted by Lucas up Suicide hill and kept ahead just enough so that high-flying I:.ucas wouldn't land on him. While the battle was going on for second, Keyes made sure he set his own pace ahead of them. Lucas slipped back by on the uphill when Butch bogged, just in time for the checkered. Moore soars, Brooks cooks at NMA Fall Nationals By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 31 The 1982 National Motosports A.s~ociation Fall Nationals I the factory teams were present with their 19S3 machinery. Valencia resident Bob Moore was on his home track and he rode his 19S3 Yamaha YZSOs to two major wins in the SO Modified 12 and over Expert and 10Scc classes. Larry Brooks took his 19S3 R&D/Suzuki RMSO to first in the S.occ Stock 12 and over Expert event. NMA Grand National Champion Paul Denis of Kawasaki took a second in the Stock event and that was his top score as a derailed chain and a cooling system breakdown shot him down in other competition. Kicking off the exciting Expert competition was the SOcc Modified event. Denis showed just why he has the number one plate as he took the holeshot. Moore was charging behind him but never in line to take over the lead. Mouse McCoy was flying on his new Honda and held third place until he bailed extremely hard on the score tower stretch that included a very difficult series of whoops. With McCoy down on the track, Kyle Lewis of Team Green took over third place. San Diego rider Todd Hoover placed fourth. Denis was looking confidently toward winning the final event. The gate dropped and all soared successfully to the first turn with the exceptional of Denis. His Kawasaki threw its chain and Paul didn't get underway till the race was half over. Moore went on to win the race with Lewis taking second and Honda aces Mike Healey and McCoy following. A 2-1 tally earned Moore the big win over Lewis, Hoover, Dennis Parker and Bryan Bruner who came from Arizona. Bruner was a jeff Ward lookalike as he rode a Kawasaki with a number 11 plate. Bruner had a fantastic start in the first moto of- the SOcc Stock Expert class. He soon dropped back and it was Denis who grabbed the lead. Brooks wanted to win just as much and he made a winning pass in the corner adjacent to the score tower. Moore came through the 'finish line in third ahead of Healey and Parker. In the final event Brook took an early lead and made Denis scheme from behind. Those two finished that way with Moore, Healey and McCoy coming closest. A perfect I-I tally presented Brooks the top trophy over Denis, Moore, Healey and McCoy. . The 10Scc race was perhaps the best race with the top name Expert riders involved. The opening moto saw some back and forth passing and nobody had the race wired. Taking the better start was Moore followed by Denis and Healey. Then Healey blasted by the leaders to take over first place. It wasn't long before Denis picked up the pace and passed Healey on the whoops by the score tower and was in command of the race over Moore, Healey, Lewis and McCoy. Similar to the SOcc Modified event, Denis was anticipating a final moto win in the IOScc class when bike troubles came his way. Moore ha.d the lead and Denis was able to take it away but then he ran into a pole and this damaged the cooling system on his Kawasaki. Moore went on'to win the race with Honda riders McCoy and Healey the runners-up. Bruner placed fourth ahead of Shaun Kalos. A hard ride and a good break gave Moore the overall win over Healey, McCoy, Bruner and Brundage. Canyon Country is where many fast Honda racers reside. Not only does Supercross champion Donnie Hansen live there but so do Mini racers McCoy and Ronnie Densford. Today was a great one tor Densford as he swept both the SOcc Stock and Modified 9-11 Novice events. In the first Stock race it was Honda 1-2 as Densford had the lead over jimmy "Monkey" Button. Then Button fell out of the race and Steven Kotajarvi took over. Densford had the lead in the final race with Button in second until Kotajarvi moved up to take second with Richard Saxton landing third. Overall it was Densford, Kotajarvi and Saxton. Densford had to overcome Honda teammate jason "Snake" Collier in the SOcc Modified 9-11 Novice first rouna'. He got by' jason for the win and returned for the final and found winning to be easy. Officially Densford won overall with Sean Blanchard taking second with a consistent pair of thirds. Gary Trachy placed third ahead of Collier and Shawn Bates. Results PEE WEE STK: 1. Karcher captures Corona MX win , By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, OCT. 29 Colin Karcher (Yam) used a consistent 2-1 tally at Corona Raceway's MX tonight to capture the Mini Novice win after spending much of the night battling with Sunwest's Mike Wiese (Yam), who settled for second with a 1-4 combination. The action began when the gate dropped for the start of moto one where it was Karcher who stole the holeshot, inches ahead of Wiese, Shade Ramirez (Suz) and Steve Wamboldt (Yam). The two leaders then began to duel for the top spot in a handlebarto-handlebar battle. But during the third lap Wiese found a weak spot in the leader's defense and darted by, taking over the lead. Karcher stayed close, but he ran out of time to repass Wiese. Mitch Eber(Kaw), whogotoff to'a sixth place start, ended up the molo with lhird while Steve Burdette (Yam) took fourth. Karcher again shOI into the lead at the start of the second moto while john Albright (Yam), Ramirez and Wiese followed. During the third lap
