England Hardbound. 224 pages. $22.95 Jerry Hatfield, a colond in the U.S. Air Force, has made a valuable contribution to the growing library of motorcycling books with American Racing Motorcycles. Ace, Crocker, Curtiss, Cyclone; Emblem, Excelsior/Super X, HarleyDavidson, Henderson, Indian, Merkel, Mitchell, Orient, Pope, ReadingStandard, Thomas Auto-Bi, Thor and Yale are the marques covereq in the book. Excelsior, Harley-Davidson and Indian receive the most attention (largest chapters) as well they should, for as Hatfield states, "These three makes account for about 80 percent of the American racing story ..." Covering the fascinating history of American motorcycle racing from 1900 through 1980, the book is highlighted by first-person accounts and nearly 150 black and white photos. While the majority of the photos concentrate on the machinery, many of the men who twisted the throttles are pictured-pioneers like Jake DeRosier, Charles Balke and Cannonball Baker right on up to Jay Springsteen. The book is not free of error. We came across the following: Harley's Fred Nix was not killed in the offseason. He died in a dune buggy/car accident on July 18, 1969 in the middle of the season. Hatfield repeats an ofLprinted error by stating only six pushrod OHV Excelsiors were built. Most Excelsior enthusiasts know of 15 existing bikes and one Excelsior expert claims the firm built 24. Loudon is misspelled several times ("Louden"). To Hatfield's credit he welcomes "constructive criticism" and asks that corrections be brought to the attention of the publisher.. All in all, American Racing M otorcycles is a welcome addition to any longtime racing enthusiast's library, and a must for those who think our grand sport started "yesterday." The book is available from Motorcycle Specialties Co., P.O. Box 1180 Artesia, CA 90701 ($22.95 plus $2 shipping. California residents add 6~% sales tax), and from MotorspoIt, 6115 Gravois, St. Louis, MO 63116 ($22.95 plus $1 postage and handling.)
