anada- Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-Al third. Coleman kept the squeeze on McRae through the first half and Jamerson and Brett Cahors battled back and forth for fourth. On lap six, McRae held a big lead as Klein closed in for the second at the finish. Coleman got an early lead in moto two, but a slight judgement error let Joe McCrummon take the lead. Moto one leader McRae started back in seventh and began his push early, quickly getting by Jamerson and Klein. Next, Cabors got by McCrummon for third and McRae passed another rider as Coleman tried to stretch his new lead. McRae kept the throttle wide open and finally gained first place and the overall. Johnny Hicks led the Minis from start to finish on a new 1983 Suzuki with Terry Bostard in second and Mike Pascarella's Kawasaki pushing from third. Still, the positions didn't change during moto one. Pascarella took the lead in moto two, but Hicks grabbed the lead on lap four and held it to the finish over Pascarella and Bostard. Concord Yamaha rider Jerry Brandt holeshot the Open Pro moto one with Lance Coleman right behind. By the end of lap four, Berkeley Yamaha's Wayne Archer had taken second, following Brandt to the checker. Archer headed up moto two and never surrendered to Brandt, thus achieving the overall. Kephart, Burkett top Jolly Roger 250s By Bubby S" Snob KENT, WA, OCT. 24 Jolly Roger racers came prepared for white-water motocross at the Seattle Motorcycle Club race today. But, as soon as somebody in the pits opened an umbrella, the rain stopped and racing started. Joe Kephart came out on top of the 250cc A class, riding his shiny new Alki Maico/KTM Austrian mount. Although Tom Moriarity (Yam) pulled the holeshot in the first round, Kephart started with a close second. Kephart didn't take over the numberone spot though, until after he and third-place Rodney Jessen (Mai) had made a "European sandwich" out of fourth-place Charlie Marrs (Yam), who was closing in fast. Marrs backed off from the sCramble for the ·front three positions, until Jessen's tranny developed an affinity for third gear. Then Marrs was busy getting sideways and off the pegs over the double jumps, trying to pass Jessen. Kephart was occupied.maintaininga slim lead over Moriarity. By lap four, Marrs was on Kephart's rear tire and the two leaders stayed that way until the checkers. Moto two saw Moriarity up in front again, with Kephart charging close behind. They stayed that way until the final flag, with the overall spots going to Kephart, Moriarity, and Jerry Callaway (Yam). Notorious for berzerk racing, the 250cc B class lived up to its reputation. A veritable potpourri of riding styles was exhibited in the scrambles to see who would take home one of the handsome SMC wall-plaque trophies. While Vern Huber (Suz) was astounding everybody.by campaigning his 175PE (lights included) to second overall, Ron Burkett (Hus) worked his way through the pack in both motos to take home first place. Yet, the real stunt of the day was Greg Gregovich's eject-a-tank routine, which followed his demonstration in "how to ride your Maico like a unicycle." Amazingly enough, Gregovich came back to finish the second moto. Results PEE WEE A: ,. Louis Aron. PEEweE B: ,. Michael Brewer; 2. Aaron Lykken. MINI A: ,. Larry Ward; 2. Tommy Judge. MINI B: ,. Fl 32216, 1-904-64 f~ 7071 Dillion outgasses Dowers at High Desert 100 By Kathi Davis BEND, OR, OCT. 24 Idaho's Ron Dillion took the overall and Open Expert win at the 13th annual High Desert 100 in Bend, Oregon, with little trouble. Dillion got a good start with Husky rider Bill Dowers and Curt Harpham hot on his tail. However, as the course turned towards the Pine Forest, Dillion made no mistakes as the top 10 riders juggled positions in the tight trails, full of downed trees made slippery by'recent rains. There were also numerous trees ranging from 18 to 25 inches apart, scattered all along the course - just to keep things interesting. As the riders finished, it looked as everyone of the 290-plus entries had crashed several times. Bent handlebars, broken levers and torn jerseys were the order of the day. The course length was without a doubt a factor'in how the riders finished. With two separate loops of 52 and 53 miles, riders were subject to the decision of getting gas at the 30mile checkpoints and losing time, or chancing it. Quite of few made the wrong decision. For Bill Dowers, that decision cost him a chance of winning as be and close friend Dillion came racing across' the desert floor. With the pits in sight, Dowers came to a stop in a draw within one mile of the pits, out of gas. By the time his dad got gas to Dowers, Dillion was long gone. Dillion was duely happy at the finish of Oregon's largest desert race. After last year's narrow loss to Brad Turnidge, winning it this year was probably his most satisfying win. His only remark was "The bike worked great, and I made no mistakes, except for a few small crashes." PUMP GASOLINE FULLY LEGAL FOR AMA COMPETITION Fast Kats wear ·em!
