uthern Nevada- Southern Callfornla-Arlzona-Southern Nevada; Southern Callfornla-Arlzona-Southern Nevada-Southern Call Burdette slipped by Wiese for fourth and he soon had third· at Ramirez's expense as Ramirez 'went down. Throughout the race, Karcher kept Albright at bay and eventually took the win and overall. Third went to Burdette while Wiese followed in fourth. In the 250cc Intermediate class, Suzuki Country's Duane Mapes (Suz) cruised to a flawless I-I combination win. Mapes' nearest threat was Husky-mounted Ron Lawson who settled for second with a 3-2 tally. A 2-3 tally by Henry Marmolejo (Hon) was good enough for third. Consistent riding (2-2) by Chris Anderson (Hon) earned him the victory in the 250cc Nov~ce class. First moto winner Tom Mee (Suz) settled with second overall after taking third in moto two. Lyerla leaps at Dune Stadiumcross By Mike Johns VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 24 As the gates opened at Indian Dunes, the weather didn'tlook very promising. Rain had already been steadily falling for an hour. But by the time practice started, the clouds were breaking up and a beautiful day was in store for the crowds. Over 1000 came to see an awesome track. And they weren't disappointed. Of the amateurs, the I25cc Intermediates put on the most professional display of rider ability. The first moto hit the track with Danny Kudrave in control. Gary Sailors was pushing Kudrave and his Glendale Suzuki to the outer limits. In third place was Kawasaki of Goleta rider Skeeter Lyerla. Sailors made some good moves, but Kudrave hung tough. At one point Sailors tried a pass over the "High Point Mesa." Kudrave wouldn't budge, and as they crested the top of the Matterhorn for the checkered flag it was Kudrave, Sailors and Lyerla. Round two saw Dave Antillion grab the holeshot and move out over second place Darin Powel from Tulare Kawasaki. In the meantime, Suzuki of Ventura rider Lance Johnson was coming from midpack at a rate that would startle a seasoned Pro. Johnson picked off riders in mid-air, corners, straights and anywhere he could sqeeze through. With two laps left, Powel went down leaving AntillioJ'}.. ~ll "lone. Lance Johnson had caught up to Skeeter Lyerla, who had moved into second. With one lap left, it looked like an easy win for Antillion until he became another victim of "The Pit". Antillion hit a deep hole that sent him over the bars and back to the pits. Lyerla could feel Johnson's pressure, but could never see him due to the fact that he was always above him. Johnson flew higher than anyone, but itdidn't payoff. At the end Lyerla took the win, Johnson nailed second. The 250cc Pros had another good turnout causing a greater 'payback. Diverse styles would. make up the scenario for this event. Down the "Shoei Start Chute" it was Brand J o'hnson this time. Brand has been picking up speed each time out and is again becoming a major threat to the Pro class. Johnson took the Suzuki of Ventura RM250 all the way to the checkered. Kenny Zahrt would hold second_place all the way' to the end, while Suzuki of Bakersfield rider Darren Oliver would come from behind to finish third. . In moto two, Zahrt let Johnson take the backseat as the two riders held off the rest of the pack. Andy Segale rode hard to try and beat the Honda of Gary Adams for third. But Adams was not to be denied. At the flag it was Zahrt 2-1, for first, Johnson second 1-2, Segale finished 4-4 for third overall and Adams was fourth with a 7-3 score. George, Richardson, Blose AZ fall MX Series ·Champs By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, OCT. 24 James George, Timbo Richardson and Chappy Blose took the Arizona Fall Motocross Series wins at today's race at Canyon Raceway, but Bill Dalton, Gary Dircks and Bryan Hayes took today's class wins. After the racing was over, a drawing was held for two new motorcycles. Only class winners were eligible for the drawing. Open Amateur class winner Bill Lynch won the new Honda CR250R donated by Tri-City Honda and a new Kawasaki KXl25 was donated by a group that included Canyon Raceway, Thunder Ridge Kawasaki, Thunder Valley Raceway and Kawasaki Motor Corporation. Mini Novice winner Brent Wineland was the lucky KX recipient. In the day's racing, Suzuki-mounted Gary Dircks added to his bank account with a )-) finish in the 250cc Expert class while Apache Honda-sponsored Bill Dalton took the overall in the 125s. The )25cc Expert first moto was more like a "Bad News Bears go to the motocross" than a Pro race as four of the top riders bounced off each other, trying the same lines at the same time. Johnnie Dermo's return to Arizona started out well as he jumped out in the lead with Chappy Blose and Drey Dircks going line for line behind. Five turns later Dircks slipped his Suzuki by for the lead. Blose filled the slot for second. The craziness started two laps later when Dircks bounced off the tires after Death Pit and Blose bounced off his downed bike a split second later. While they were regaining their composure,.Daiton kept his and slipped .by.fQ the l~ad. Qircks: quick recovery Chappy Blose soared to second 125cc Expert and an Arizona Series win. gOl him the lead half a lap later while Paul Bowman and Dermo collided after going bar to bar for third. Dermo got up to finish II th while Bowman sat and watched. Still in the lead, Dircks pulled off with carb problems, only to come back a lap later and a moto win short. . Doug Jackson saw his chance for second, but lost it as quickly with a spill at the bottom of the tower. With almost half the fielQ literally down and out, Bruce Peters stayed up for second. Todd Kessel came back from dead last to push in third, but a ,shattered front wheel kept him from pushing any further. He cruised in for eighth while Blose rode hard to finish third. The race was the absolute scorer's nightmare, but Dalton moved stead- . ily tbrough lappers to take a 30. second lead into the pits. The second moto lacked the drama and mistakes of the first when Dircks took over early with Dalton moving· in behind. Blose waited in third for the mistakes that never came.
