TEN YEARS AGO It was announced that Dave Aldana would be sponsored by Norton in the 1973 AMA Grand National Championship Series. loo-o . '(1) ..0 8 Tim Hart won eight of nine Expert class motos to take all three classes at a weekly CMC Ascot motocross'. Hart used a Penton to win the 125cc bash, then used a pair of Maicos in the 250s and 500s. (1) ;:> o Z Bruce Sass won the 125cc A class of the Colorado State TT Championship, then went on to record runnerup finishes in the 250 and 650cc A classes. The winners of those two were Bob Conway and Norm Sparks, respectively. Arlo Englund was the 250cc B champion. Sparky Edmonston used a Triumph to top the Open Experts in a benefit TT scrambles in Bakersfield. For unusual machinery, the award had to go to Open Junior winner Rick Zimmerman, who rode a '46 HarleyDavidson. In a Fremont, CA, marathon, Chris Willens (CZ) won the Open class, but finishing second was old Pro Jerry Griffith on' a BSA that finished the race sans clutch, brakes, etc. Jim Fishback (CZ) went a step closer to clinching the number one 250cc desert plate by winning overall in the Spokebenders D-37 hare scrambles. Bill. Saltzman and A.C. Bakken finished 2-3 on Open class Huskys. The Los Angeles Times promoted an ACA motorcycle road race at Riverside Raceway (actually it was a car race with the motorcycles in a supporting role), and 80,000 people came to watch. Pat Evans took the overall win on 350 Yamaha TR-3, followed by George Kerker on a near-stock Honda 750 and Bob Endicott on a BSA triple. Wes Cooley borrowed a Yamaha from Evans and won the 250cc class. The Trans-AMA MX Series continued to be an Ake Jonsson benefit, with the Swedish Maico rider taking the overall win in the Houston, TX, round. Yamaha rider Christer Hammargren fought his way up to second with Heikki Mikkola third on a Husky. Brad Lackey (Kaw) was top AmeriC".:ln at eighth overall. The 250cc Support Class went to Husky's Bob Grossi over Peter Lamppu and his proto Kawasaki. Fun begins when you let the clutch lever out. Another machine exPected to debut soon was a four-cylinder, six-speed Yamaha TZ750 two-stroke. Kawasaki also had its 250 and 441 two-strokes approved for competition. Phil McDonald won the 250cc Expert class on both days of a Utah MX Championship double-header.
