Motorcyclist's First Annual Great Giveaway Race over Tony Ramirez/Peter Breede. The "Giveaways" included over 140 prizes donated (0 the club by various sponsors as thanks to the riders for pUlling on a good show all year at the races. And in the closest finish of the day, Essaff/Cruegar took the sidecar win - but only after an incredibly close ballie with Ramirez!Breede. Ramirez! Breede, on a 750cc Suzuki rig, put up a good fight against the larger 1000cc Kawasaki of Essaf£lCruegar. They lost the win by mere inches because of a missed shift in the last turn of the last lap, which gave Essaf£lCruegar (who had been plagued by carburetor problems) the break they needed to grab the victory. Terry Statum took an early lead in the 750-0pen Stock Production, but transmission problems caused him to finish sixth after leading six of the seven laps. Behind Terry, 750cc classers Earl Roloff, Jeff Gehrs and Mike Krolick went at it for second, and when Terry started having problems, Roloff inherited the lead and took the overall win with Krolick second. In 600cc Modified Production, American Road Racing Association JX>ints leader Aaron Post led the first four laps, but an apparent front wheel blowout in fast turn seven took him out and left him dazed and confused. Northern California riders Joe Montoya and Frank Mazur, who had been following Post, took over the battle for the lead. Montoya took his GPz- . eater Yamaha Seca to the flag first. Chuck Pace and Dwayne Lane really got into it in the Formula four and four A raCe, with Lane ahead most of the race, although only by a few feet. But in the very last lap, Pace pulled out the stops and buzzed by Lane to cross the line first, although lx>th men won their respective classes. Carl Nagy and Curtis Maddocks did an excellent job of putting the Great Giveaway race together and keeping everything running smoothly. Results 16 450 MOD PROD: ,. Clint Whitehouse (Yam); 2. Yelldn fires Carlsbad win By Lee Taylor CARLSBAD, CA, OCT. 24 On a rainy day at Carlsbad, a hearty band of California Racing Club riders, in the true spirit of motocross, made their mark on a track that has tested the greatest racers of all time. Some were tested to the max. 250cc Beginner Doug Funderburg, for example, riding for Bill Millar Racing. Trying to make up for lost time in his first maLO, Funderburg got out of shape on a gnarly stretch, flew head first over a fence which snared his Suzuki. The rest of the 250cc Beginners struggled on by. Emerging the leader was Van N uys Suzuki entry Randy Stubblefield, who was followed across the finish line by Jim Hassell and Rich Yelkin. The second moto brought more of the same for Funderburg, not to be confused with the Thunderbirds. Forced to DNF, he checked the day off to experience and watched as Bruce Dale Look command with Yelkin riding shotgun and Brady Helm in third. By day's end, with an out-of control brush fire closing in on the track, Yelkin quickly gathered his gold with a 3-2 ride, Helm cinched second place honors with a 6-3 and Mike Bandfield gathered third place honors. As usual, the Minis refused to let anything stop them. Whether it.be brush fires or mudholes. Paul Matthews, of the famed Matthews Brothers Racing Team, led a seasoned field of 80cc Modified Novices through their paces to take home the gold. Not without a fight, however. Throughout the first moto, ScOll Murphy took charge and held Matthews to second.with Cliff Schulenberg and his DG Performance Suzuki suffering numerous indignities in third, among them, bailing in the infamous mudhole that was claiming racers on every lap. Schulenberg recovered both his position as well as dignity. By moto's end, Murphy led the way followed by Mallhews and Schulenberg. The second round of action found Tim Heath, who DNF his first time out, grabbing the lead and fighting back Matthews and Murphy. When the day drew to a close, Matthews garnered top honors with a 2-2 tally, Murphy's second overall qualified him for San Diego Stadium and Brian Felix's solid 4-4 ride took third.
