Yamaha teammates Broc Glover and Rick Johnson split wins in front of the modest crowd with Glover taking the win due to johnson's first moto third placing. Of the three class winnen. only O'Mara was mounted on works machinery. Glover. johnson and Martin were piloting 1983 production.bikes. Mike Bell rode to second in the 500cc class with starts in the top 10. but Tim I....ocey put his '83 YZ490 into third the hard way after starting last in the first moto due to a first tum incidenL Scott Bumwonh took his OWI25 Yamaha to third 125cc behind jim Gibson after working up from a first moto stan similar to I....ocey·s. David Bailey rode late moto charges to third in the 250cc class. The Huron track was a pleasant surprise after the drive through the surrounding countryside, which grows excellent crops. but looked flat and very dry. The Huron course resembles an outdoor. sandy. supercross track. Built below ground level. a large grassy levee around the course provided the spectators with excellent viewing. Unfortunately, the track became a single berm one-liner soon after practice making for difficult passing in the 125cc class. Position changes stayed at a minimum in most races and there were no come from behind winners. Suspensions and endurance were tested, despite the shorter than National motos, by the rough. choppy whoops that textured the multi-jump track. Several large. but usually safe double jumps allowed the spectators to see the art of jumping displayed at its finest. Absent from this week's line-up were last week's 125 and 500cc winners George Holland and Alan King. Only Warren Reid. who finished fourth in the 250cc class. was on hand to represent the Suzuki factory. Mike "Chief" Tripes was the most successful Euro-bikecampaigner. Heputan '83 250 Husqvarna into sixth in the 250ccclass. Minis Yamaha did their homework during the week and Yamaha yzso..mounted Bob Moore, a top runner last week till a fall put him down. grabbed decisive holeshots in both matos. Danny Storbeck. Yamaha's most successful rider at the Porica City Mini Nationals, made his flight from San An(()nio worth the effort with a second in moto one followed by RBeD Suzukimounted Larry Brooks. In the second moto, Moore. who is - diminutive even for an 80 rider, used his light weight to his advantage tn the power robbing sand and grabbed a big lead. Brooks, Storbeck and Kawasaki's Willis Surratt, Paul Denis and Kyle Lewis followed ahead of Honda-mounted Tyson Vohland Moore was stretching his lead as Brooks and Storbeck battled. Storbeck, the Mike Bell of 80 riders, was giving away a lot of ground at the exit of each tum to Brooks, but pounded into the tum harder than any rider on the track. The tactic paid off as Brooks bogged momentarily and Storbeck was into second and gone. Storbeck and Moore played cat and mouse for the final three laps with Storbeck agonizingly close, only to see Moore jet away out of the turns. The battle went to the flag with Moore winning by inches.
