.'Miracle Worker' nabs the crOWD

Before a sellout crowd, 20-year-old Shawn
Moran captured the U.S. National Speedway
Championship, scoring 14 out of a possible
10 15 points at the Orange County Fairgrounds
track. Moran dropped one point
to Dennis Sigalos in his first
race, then swept the remaining
four to take the crown. Mike
Faria took second with 12
points, while Dubb Ferrell totalled
11 to round out the winner's circle.
The defending National Speedway
Champion, Broce Penhall, was on
hand, working as a commentator following the retirement he anĀ·
nounced after he won the World
Championship in August. Penhall's
date for the evening was Melissa Gilbert, star of the NBC TV series Little
Howe: The New Beginning.
Although Moran dropped his only
point in the fourth event of the 20race evening, event 14 was perhaps
