He was matched against Alan Christian, the points leader at that time, as well as Mike Faria and Mike Curoso. Moran took the gate, with Faria and Christian occupying a joint second. Chnstian was on the outside with Faria inside, and when Faria went wide in turn two, it forced Christian up high and allowed Moran to pick up two bikelengths. Christian couldn't regain second, and the two-point difference gave Moran the points lead. Earlier in the evening, the second event showed that it was a wide-open ball game. The heat was comprised of Dave Sims, Dubb Ferrell, Steve Lucero and Faria, with Ferrell leading the first lap. Suddenly Lucero struck from the outside like a bullet, passing everyone and leading to the flag. This was the significant race when the points were totalled for second and third. Event six was a big race for Sigalos. Mike Bast was leading the race when it was red-flagged after Lucero crashed. On the restart, Sigalos took the lead with Bast unable to catch him. That gave Sigalos two perfect rides, but in event 11 Sigalos only scored one point, finishing behind Faria a~d Buddy Robinson. Sigalos'luck got worse in event 20, the closest race of the evening. Sigalos, Christian, Sims and Tom Burba were the riders, with Siggy and Christian riding a close and tough race, touching several times. In turn one on the last lap, Christian tried to go inside and Sigalos said no, but both riders ended up on the ground. Sigalos got up first, and took third for one point behind Sims and Burba. As a result, Sigalos and Christian tied for fourth with 10 points apiece. Seven-time U.S. National Speedway Champ Mike Bast had his problems on the evening, but made no excuses, even though word in the pits was that he was still recovering from illness. Likewise, Rookie of the Year Rick Miller had his troubles, scoring five points. He started off strong with a win, but was only able to take two points in his next four rides. Now the new National Champ, Moran looked so calm it was as though he knew he had the event won already. Shawn showed true professional character by congratulating both Faria and Ferren on their performances. • Results FINAL STANDINGS: 1. Shawn Moran (14); 2. Mike Faria (12); 3. Dubb Ferrell (11); 4.
