Freddie Spencer led most of the race , only to tangle with Uncini. [Continued from page 22) race was a five man fight with Thierry Espie leading Mang, Paolo Ferrett i, Christian Estrosi and Roland Freymond. For Mang to take the title he had to win with Tournadre no better than fifth , and early on Tournadre was just inside th e top 10 in n inth . Mang took the lead on the fourth lap, but didn 't break free of Espie until past the halfway point of the 15 lap, 61 mile race. Running 15th at that point was Connecticut's Rich Schlachter, who'd been troubled with igni tion problems all weekend. H e'd qualified 32nd out of 42 riders fro m 16 countries, but got a good sta rt and was wri nging his J model Yamaha out in pursuit of th e leaders. His ch arge took a big detour. " I was going into th e chicane on the back part of the course wh en thi s other rider ran me off th e tra ck. I th o ugh t I was going to lose it , then I saw a dra in age ditch and did n't kn ow how deep it was. I stood u p on the pegs and mo tocro ssed through it to keep going," said Schl achter. H e lost the draft to Frenchman Jean-Francois Balde, who he 'd been followi ng, and finished 17th , h is ign ition pro blem s never cured. Mang was building a cu sh ion over second placed Ferr ett i, but T ournadre had moved int o fourth as part of a five-man swap meet. West German Manfred H erweh ga ve the cro wd a burst of hope when he for ged to th e front of the quint et, theoretically gi ving Mang th e cushion he ne eded for th e-title. Kawasa ki 's Ma ng won by 8.43 seconds over Ferretti and another 12 seconds on Espie. Tourn adre was fo urt h, giving him hi s first wor ld tit le. 50cc G P In the 50cc class title asp irant Stefa n Doerflinger held a 15 point lead on second pl ace Eugenio Lazzarini. For Lazzarini to take the tide h e'd have to win th e race and hav e Swissman Doerflinger finish out of th e money.Ir didn 't happen. After smashing World Champion Ricardo Tormo 's track record by a lm ost two sec o n d s in q u a l i fyi n g , Kreidler mounted Doerflinger went right to the front of th e 32 ma n pack wi th Lazzarini in h is shadow. Lazzarini soon got by and held off Doerflinger to win by 1.7 seconds. Doerflinger took his first ever World Title and th e rider he took it from , Ricardo Tormo, finished fourth . behind third place Claudio Lusuardi, It was the last 50cc race ever, with the engines being enlarged to.80cc next year. S idecars The sidecars (Seitenwagen ) gave the crowd of 100,000 plus, more than their Deutsche marks ' worth with a spectacular display of slipping and sliding in a downpour. The homegrown SchwarzellHuber team had a grip on the title, but reigning champs Biland and Waltisperg needed a win and 10th or worse by the leading Germans to retain their titl e. They fulfilled half the requirements by winning the race , but their Krauser Racing teammates, Sch warzeI and Huber, took sixth, and wit h it the ti tle. With most of the other riders unsigned, an unexpected increase in factory involvement in the 250cc class, . and the elim ination of the 350s, it could make for a very interesting p reIude to an even more interesting 1983 season. • Results 500cc: 1.
