TEN YEA S CEET MAKES A STAND! Stands available in yellow, red, and black. AGO T he big news was being made a t O n tario Motor Speedway, site of the Cham p ion Spark Plug 200 roa d race. After two 100-mile heats had been ru n, .r he winner was Englishman Pau l Smart. Smart combined a 5-1 score to beat New Zealand' s Geoff Perr y (Suz), who posted a 4-2, and Italia n Harley-Davidson ri der Renzo Pasolini (6-4). Mark Brelsford was top American at fourth ove rall , follo wed by En glish man Joh n Cooper (BSA) and U.S . dirt track star Mert La wwill (H -D). Kel Carruthers (Yam) won the firs t leg, but DNF the second. It wa sn 't a totally bad weekend for Carruthers, however, as he won the Juni or/ Expert Combined ra ce. Following closely most of the way - and leading at times - was Yamahamounted Kenn y Roberts. Dav e Smith and Marty L unde finished 3-4, bo th on Yamahas. In the Junior ra ce, the Kawasaki of Jerry Green e led the Yamahas of Steve Baker and J eU March to the checkered flag. O n the in field at O nt ario was a professional motocross, where the 250cc class win went to R ich Eiersted t (Mai) and the 500cc class to J im Wilson (CZ). New Zeala nd's Ivan Mauger won his fou rth World Individual Speedway Champ ionship at We~bly Stadium in London, England. Ma uger finished the regulation five races with 13 points and was tied with Swede Bernt Persson, whom he defeated in a runoff. Defendin g champion O le Olsen finished third. ' H usky's Heikki Mikkola tu rned in a 1-1-2 perform a nce to ca p tu re the Interna tional class in the Trans-AMA Seri es even t h eld at Linnville, O H . Second overall went to Maico rider Hans Maisch with Suzuki' s R oger DeCoster third. Bryan Ken n y was top America n at six th. The Su p port class fea tured a th ree-way tie, with Bob Grossi (H us) edging Peter Lamppu (Kaw) and Jim West (Hus) by virt ue of a better second rnoto fin ish. Ben Hur was more tham 10 year s ago, but the sp iri t ca ught on in Ind iana. Promoters there staged a m o tor cycle chariot race, with drivers con tro lling the mach in es from chariots by mea ns of con trol cable lash-ups. The main event was won by Denny Aigner. Action in the Open Senior class of a San Antonio, TX, motocross saw Kent Howerton (Yam) doing most of the leadi ng. However , in the second rnoto h is throttle cab le broke, and he had to make a temporary hoo k-u p with a wire coat hanger. H owert on wound up th ird beh ind Steve Foster and James Garcia. In a benefit scrambles held in Stockton, CA, Alex Jorgensen rod e a Kawa saki to win the 250cc .Expert class over J im Foley and G ary L ozano. Future speedway star Mike Faria won the l OOcc Expert class, and th e 125cc No vice laurels were take n by a youngster with someth ing of a fu ture hi mself, Ricky Graham . • 21
