William Bowman too k his Yamaha out front in moto one, but Baker soon had the lead over first time Pro Chris Heyrman, on a 250cc Suzuki. A lappe d rider slowed Baker, giving H eyrman an opportunity to close the gap. Heyrman worked into the lead late in the race and held it to the finish. Baker was second, and another first time pro, Mar k Barr, moved his KTM to third. Steve Benolkin, one of three Benolkin bro thers entered at the race, pushed his H onda to fourth. Mo to two saw Baker take the holesho t in to the rough straight tha t followed. Chris Swan k was running second over H eyrma n , but He yrman moved to second within a la p . When th e two la p board came out, Baker and H eyrm an ha d 26 seconds on Barr, who was foll owed by Ben olkin , whoalmostlostitperlormingaskysaaper jump . Ben o lkin faded during the closing laps and J eff Stevenson an d Gavin P unch locked up th e 4-5 slots .
