Morga n felt th e U.S. wo u ld be leading the standings after the vote wa s over. Burle son co u nseled hi s Trophy T eam ri ders to scrutinize their bikes very carefully before startin g and to ch eck for anyth in g th at didn 't look ri gh t. "Stay alert on th e trails," said Burleson, "you never know what the Czech s may have cooked u p if we're leadi n g." After the vote was lost a n d we were still in second, the preca utions didn 't ma tter. Day Six The time sch edu le remained on C for the shortened day six loop of just over 60 miles before the fin al MX test. Most riders with no chance of changin g their medal status did as much rep air work as possible with the sole inten t of finishing. T h ey took th e time penalties. Three ri ders entered th e final test on gold. Ed Lojak, who h ad consistently turned in the best individual scores of an American rider, T erry Cu n n in gha m, who had also ridden on gold all week , and Mark Hyde, wh o, through a combination of hard ridin g and attrition in h is class, had gon e from bro n ze on da y one to gold begi n n in g day six. The test track, ~ lo ng, serpentine co urse at an MX park wh ere th e Czechs had held a 500cc Wor ld Championsh ip MX GP, was ti ght enough to make a good start a nece ssity. The five motos for the I lg riders who had made it this far were timed events lastin g 20 minutes. Scoring was simple: Finish fiveJaps or as many as th e leader within the 20 m inu tes and you get your timed score. If yo u didn 't fini sh within the all otted time you were assessed a score of 1,200 points plus a penalty of 250 points for n ot being within the 20 min u tes. T h e 250 point penalt y cost H yde an d Cunningham th eir gold medals. O n ly Lojak, who fin ish ed fourth in hi s heat, and LaVoie, who finished eigh th in his, were within their 20 mi n u tes at the fin ish of th eir respective heats. The Czech s threw in some wri n kles, loading the h ea t with Lojak in it with nearly all500cc ri ders while he was one of onl y four riders on 250s. There were smiles all arou n d once th e racing was fin ish ed. " I might even have a beer tonight," said one ri der. "Make that two," said another. ." T h ose of you that earned medals, wh eth er gold, silver or bro n ze, have every right to be proud," said John Morga n. "In years to co me you'll loo k back on this event and realize th a t just to finish was a privilege and th a t all th e work, sweat and wh atever else you put into your effort was well wor th it. I congratulate all our riders, th ose who finished and those w.ho didn 't. You all ga ve 100 percent and did a hellu va job you can be p ro ud of." • Result s TROPHY TEAM: 1.
