PRO UCT VALUJ\ ON Pr o d u c t eva l uat i o n : O ' Neal Ult ra-Lit e Race pants One of our staffers has six months riding time on a p air of O ' Neal 's U ltra-Lite race pants. T h a t' s a lot of riding tim e and a m in imum of two wash ing mach ine sessions a month . Even though the pa nts are nearly worn through on th e leath er knee areas, our pair has held u p well a nd left our test pilot's skin intact an d , for the most part, comfortable. We did have problems wit h two sea ms co ming adrift in th at time, but not until late in the test. Bo th insta n ces were easily remedied and have caused no furt h er problems. We found the Ultra-Lites to be as their name suggests, ultralig ht. We were also impressed with the fit an d . how they seemed adequa tely coolon ho t days and warm enough on cooler da ys. These pants feature a tightly woven nylon outer material and a looser weav e, almost vented , li ni n g material. A band of elastic r u ns down bo th legs with extra elastic on the inside at the waist a n d a bro ad area of. the stretchy stuff over the calves rather than zippers. The elastic con tr ib u tes a great deal to the overall fit and comfo rt. In the calf area especially, elastic is preferr ed by our staff over zip pers or Velcro®, bo th of which ca n cause disco m fort when trapped between an unyielding boo t and ten der skin . A tie-do wn-like fasten er cinchs the belt, and -a zipper with nylon teeth holds the garmen t up. A VeIcro® closure opens in the li n ing to load the hinged; padded, removable kn eecup in to the leg of th~ p ant from the inside. As mentioned earl ier, lea ther protects that area fro m a brasion fro m the fuel tank and other motorcycle style protubances. The finish and materials seemed go od and offered good protection. T he hinge in the kneecup was a favor ite feature as it allowed the rider 's legs to bend easily and made clambering onto a tall motocro sser easier. Other th a n an in it ia l feeling that the pants were fall ing off beca use they are cu t lower in the rear th a n we were used to , the pants have bee n a pleasure to wear from th e first time to the present. Since this pan t has a su ggested ret ail of $89.95 wit h O'Neal or a bike bra nd on the leg a n d $79.95 in p lai n legs, we would rate th em as a good and goodloo king valu e for the mo ney. O 'Neal will also have a vented mod el in th eir line-up by th e ti me this is publish ed . The ven ted models go for $99.95.
