Peterso n took the win in th e 250cc and 500cc Exh ibition cla sses, but his chances of a grand-slam weekend eluded hi m wh en h is luck ra n so ur in th e O pen Exhi bitio n division . Peterso n used a Maico to win th e 250s , wh il e a Jawa hel ped him tak e ih e vict o ry in th e 500s. By Sunday afternoon , the class th a t everyo ne had been waitin g for was a bo u t to begin - the final of th e O pen Exhibitio n , or Un lim ited class. T he first few riders to a ttempt th e hill had a roug h time negotia ting th e to ug h , powdery secti on, nev er m ak ing a real ch a llenge at the hil l. Then it was Peterso n 's turn. H e showed everyo ne how it was supposed to be done by powerin g hi s Harley over th e so ft stuff, ove r daring lines never before used , a nd up the h il l. Peterso n looked as though he wo u ld be th e seco n d man over th e top, but his H a rley h it .an u nexp ected bum p, pi tching it in to the air. In the p rocess, h is bi ke tossed th e chain wh ile the mi g h ty Harley pounded hi m into the ground. Peterson too k hi s ti me a n d got up slow ly, luck il y he ra ised his arm signa li n g th at he wasn 't through with the hill yet. When Roessler started to m a ke h is firs t bid, h e found himself heading up the wrong hill. Ou t of ha bit, Ro essler set h imself after th e stoc k hill , but, rea li zing his mistake, he quickl y poi nt ed his Honda in th e right directi o n . H o wever , hi s error cos t him an y chances o f clear ing th e to p . H arl ey-D avidso n mou nted Steve Stith put in a fine ride, clearing th e 250-foot mark , keep ing in co nt en tio n wit h th e leaders. Peter son's on ly cha n ce to ta ke the win was simple - he had to cl ea r th e top. If a nyone co u ld do it with th e press u re o n, it would be two-time .W ido wm a ker Champ Peterson.
