Speedway season came to a close tonight in Auburn with a close, " fu ll of surprises" champion- -24 ship, which ended the season in style. Pat Linn, who had been on the injured list with a broken collarbone since the Aug. 10 qualifying round in Ventura, somehow managed to get his doctor's signature on a medical release form just hours prio r to the I race, en abling him to fill the spot vaca ted by Da vid Fa ria Jr. , who took th e night off to get married. After two completed rounds of competition, there was only one perfect score and it belonged to Pat Linn! Dennis Robinson took a second to Linn in his first round heat. In the first heat of round two, Orlandi took a second to Dennis Robinson, while Linn again took the checkered flag in his round two heat. In the third round, Robinson and Orlandi won their respective heats, while Linn took a surprise second to Bob Holmes, who turned on everything he had to "spoil" Linn's perfect score, forcing Orlandi, Robinson and Linn into a three-way tie for first. . In round four, Linn again settled for a second place finish, as Orlandi got the gate for th e win. Dennis Robinson won his fou rth round heat as well , and presto, O rlandi a n d Robinson had a -tie for firs t, with Linn o ne point o u t. T h e tense exci tement continued to mount. It was going all the way to the wire, an ything cou ld happen in roun d five. Li nn took a not h er win in his heat, as did O rla nd i. In heat 19, Ro bin son had to win to tie Orlandi for first and force a run off. It wasn't to be. This timeit was Andy Gilbertson who took the role of " spoiler," as he shot into the lead off the pole, never giving Robinson a chance for the lead. Paul Orlandi was the Gold Country . Fair Champion! Den n is Robinso n found himself in a tie for second with th e "shock of th e eveni ng" Pa t L inn. In the four la p tie breake r which followed event 20, it was a very determined Dennis Robinson who took the lead out of th e ga te a nd held it for th e win , as Linn applied th e pressure on every turn. Thrills to the very end, the finish : Orlandi, Robinson, and Linn, 1-2-3. In the Auburn Fair Junior Championship, Bart Bast was riding his last race at Auburn on a Junior bike and took the win. Scott Brant and John Houston Jr., who both fell victim to mechanical problems earlier in the race, found themselves in a four lap runoff of their own. Brant emerged victorious, forcing Houston to settle for third. Auburn SPeedway returns May 13, 1'983, see you then. _ Results 1. Paul Orlandi (141; 2. (TIE) Dennis Robinson/Pat Linn (13); 3.
