riders who went to It aly or France for their first ISDE are in for a big surp rise because th is isn 't goi n g to be a roa d ride. I imagine most riders wi ll be shocked a t the number of ch eckpoints the Czech s will have. The riders will literall y be checked to death and this is part of the Czech stra tegytigh t checks so a rider ca n' t get a rhy th m, a tra il p ace going. " L'rn tickl ed to death wit h the Trophy Team selection a nd wi th Dick Burleson bein g team man ager. Dick was in Czech o and he knows what kind of event they p u t on, which is a great h elp since n on e of the riders on the tea m ro de th ere. The support problems are mi n im ized by the fact th e team is all on one marque -Husqvarna. I feel we've got a great match-up of mud riders and hillclim bers whi ch is what we need . I'd say Ed Loj ak , Sco t H ardin and Wally Wilson are really good at climbing .an yth in g that gets in their way. Cunningham literall y p rays for ra in a n d bad weather. Melt o n doesn' t care one wa y or a nother beca use h e can ride it all. Ma r k Hyde is an Ohio mud runner and Loj a k doesn' t mind the. weather, either. I' m not wish in g bad luck on an ybody, but I think we would have an adva n tage if we were to get a couple of days of bad wea ther. " If our Vase tea m has a weakness it would be spares support for Yamaha riders Larr y Roeseler a n d Chuck Miller. Aside from that, the team is also a strong one with Husky riders Kevin H in es a nd Ron Ribolzi ro un ding out the foursome. " I strongl y feel we will be able to have more riders finish this yea r th a n we di d la st time when 12 of 37 col lected medals. I hope we can im p ro ve upon th e fourth place fin ish our Trop hy T ea m reg istered in Czecho in 1977. T he Vase T ea m was tenth. We should be a ble to improve on that." Only three riders on o ur 25 rider sq uad have ridden Czech oslova kia before: Kevin La Voie co ll ected a bro nze medal , H ig gins DN F day five because of a collapsed rear wheel, and Bobby Pearce broke a colla rbone in an accident on da y one. Notably ab sent from the U.S . tea m are some of our most ta lent ed and experienced ri ders. The rea sons th ey are not riding are many a n d varied. Some did not . attempt to qualify, some didn 't qual ify high en ough to make the team while others qualifi ed but relinquished their spots. For some, it was beyond th eir finances to ma ke the trip. In some cases , the th rill of riding the ISD E has lost its all u re. Dick Burleson, Jack Penton, Drew Smith, Frank Stacy, John Martin , Jeff Fredette, Mike Rosso, Rod Bush , Carl Cranke," Fra n k Ga ll o, Darryl Kuen zer and Dane Leimbach all come to mind as strong riders who are not competing in the ISD E th is year .
