Montgomery wards off Corona MX Novices By Kit Palmer CO RONA, CA, SEPT. 3 Suzuki-mounted Kevin Montgomery took charge of Corona Raceway's 125cc Novice class, capturing the overall win with Craig Elstins led Ken Gray and all others all night long in Auburn. Faria, Mazzacane .duel and win at Costa Mesa By Kenneth R. Kellogg COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 10 Tonight at Costa Mesa Speedway, the racing started in a light mist and ended during a heavy sprinkle, but it didn't even phase the hardcore speedway fans. They just popped open their umbrellas and watched some fine speedway racing. On the first try, the Third Division main was red flagged. On try number two it was a good start. Cliff Cody and Tom Walton battled for' first , Walton came lip with the short end, went down, got back up, but it was too late as he was in .fifth place and Cody in first. Mark Dwyer, the odds on favorite to win, was in second place from start to finish. Amazingly enough Walton, who had actually gone down earlier, finished third and the father of Mark Dwyer, a rookie himself, Mike Dwyer finished a nice fourth place. The Second Division main saw Jim Turner take the lead at the start. Turner held everyone off until the last lap when Denny Scopelitte moved underneath and took the win. Turner had to settle for second. Third place from start to finish was Tom Hughes. Dave DeTemple was one of the favorites to win in the First Division Handicap main ton ight. Sporting a new bike, DeTemple looked most impressive all night long. Although on laps three and' four DeTemple managed to hold onto second place, he was passed on the last lap by the incredible Mike Faria. Winning the event and in fact leading from start to finish was the always improving Mike Mazzacane. Mazzacane was challenged often by DeTemple, but managed to hold him off and take the win. Fourth was Steve Columbo. The final event of the night was the Scratch main. In the pole position was Alan Christian, in lane two Mike Bast, lane three Mike Faria and far outside in lane four was Dave Sims. Christian and Faria came into turn one together, but Christian went down and Faria was all alone in first. Sims was second and Bast th ird. On the second lap Bast took over second, which is where he remained, unable to take over or even catch Faria. Faria took the win, Bast second and Sims third. On Friday Sept. 17, Larry Huffman will be the special guest announcer. Also appearing will be Kelly Moran. Racing begins at 8 p.m. Result s SCRATCH MAIN : 1. Mike Faria; 2. M ike Bast 3. Elstins earns birthday checkers at Auburn By J ann Houston Phot o by J ohn Richlin AUBURN, CA, SEPT. 3 The last regular race of the 1982northern California Speedway Season was held in Auburn tonight, ending the most successful and promising season in recent years. " Crazy" Craig Elstins, who moved up into Divison One just a few short weeks ago, to join his brother Steve, was hot tonight. He won his handicap heat, th en his semi and moved into th e Handicap main even t. As in his earlier events of the evening, it was Craig Elstins in a good lead with Ken Gray, Gary Stewart and Marc Prince in a tire-to-tire battle for the second spot. On the third lap, Stewart got past Gray for a solid claim second place. In tu rn on e on lap four, Marc Prince connected with Duane Yarrow, Yarrow was down and Prince was disqualified. Craig Elstins took thecheckered flag for his first Handicap trophy, not a bad birthday present for a rider just nine days away from the big " 21" . Gary Stewart was second and Ken Gray was third. The Scratch main event was minus two of the , shall we say, " regulars" as Buddy Robinson and Duane Yarrow both failed to make the transfer from their Scratch Semis and had to settle for a spot in the Consolation, which was won by Paul Orlandi. Back to the main event, it was Dennis " Choo Choo" Robinson into the lead at the gate from the number two position with Ferris second off the pole, Ron McGill third from the third position and Andy Gilbertson fourth off the wall. It was fast, side by side and a grandstand thriller, but the positions never changed, as Dennis Robinson took his first 1982 Auburn Scratch victory; and was he happyl In ' the Division Two main, Jim Brenner took home his first Division Two trophy, Rocky Robinson was - second and Dennis Davis third. Sixteen-year-old Mike Parsons, who moved up to the big bikes from the Junior Division on his 16th birthday, July 16, won the Division Three main. Dennis Phillips was second, Keith Kavanaugh third. On the Junior side of the program, and I might add, an important part of a night of speedway in northern California, Bart Bast won his heat as well as the Junior main. "Little" Bobby Hedden suffered a broken collarbone in his heat and will be sidelined for the remainder. of the season. Scott Brant was second in the main, John Houston, Jr. was third. _ Results HANDICAP MAIN: 1. Craig Elstins; 2. Gary Ste· wart 3. Ken Gray; 4. Duane Yarrow; 5. Steve Elstins; 6. Marc Prince . The action began when Montgomery wicked-it into the lead as soon as the gate dropped. Trailing Montgomery was Gerry Lattimer (Kaw ), Alhambra Yamaha's Bill Hansen (Yam), John Burr's Mike Daversa (Yam) and Ron Stearns (Yam) . Only a few laps into the race, Montgomery had already developed a slight lead, but a few mistakes caused his lead to shrink by the third go 'round. However, Montgomery maintained his cool, keeping Lattimer at bay. Near the end of the moto, Daversa had found a way past Hansen, taking over the third spot, but was still a bit too far behind second to cause much pressure for Lattimer. Montgomery went on to take the win followed by Lattimer, Daversa , Hansen and Sterns. It was Montgomery who jammed to the front of the pack at the start of the second moto, only inches ahead of Daversa. The two leaders then proceeded.to set a hot pace while engaged in a duel for the lead. Daversa waited until the last lap to sneak past Montgo mery for the second moto win, Sterns took third while Lattimer settled for fourth. . Although he could only manage a fourth place in the first moto of the Mini class, Gary Lacy (Yam) made up for it in the second mota with a convincing win. His 4-1 tally gave Lacy .th e overall victory. Results 50 PEE WEE: 1. Billy Valko; 2. J. Jerem y; 3. Dave Ochoa. 60 PEEWEE: 1. Ryan Doly; 2.J eremy App legate; 3. Sha ne Good. 60 PEEWEE: 1.
