Amateurs Skiver, Cochran lead the way By Dale Brow n KENT, WA, SEPT. 11-12 Form er G ran d National TT stan do u t Ran dy Skiver contin ued his imp ressive road racing performa nces by taking a ru n away win in the Open Modified Pro duction class in the amateur segm ent on the Seattle Superbike Pro-Am. T he ama teur racing, run on Sa tu rday an d befor e the professiona l events on Sunday, fea tured a lot of wet weathe r riding. Skies open ed on Saturd ay m o r ning and co n t inue d th ro u gh most of the day. Only Su nday afternoo n was relatively dry. The 860cc and Open Mod ified race was one o f th e few that di d ru n o n a fair ly dr y track on Sunday. Sk iver arrived in tu rn one in the midd le of the la rge pa ck, but after the en d of th e first lap, he was doing noth ing but stretch ing h is lead. J eff Morrow and Kevi n Frazer finish ed 2-3 beh ind Skiver in class. The 860cc Modified Productio n race saw Da n Zloch wi n it on a Suzu ki, but notable was th e seco nd place fini sh o f Lee Co chran . Cochran was riding a 500cc Yamaha sing le h e reporte dly p u rchased in a basket for $40 from an Alaskan fisherman. Co chran was the weeke n d 's most successfu l rider. Besides the seco nd in 860cc Modified , he al so won 600cc Modi fied Production an d Open Single GP. The amateur program also fea tured a coup le of p reviews for the P ro racing co n tests. Canadian Superbike Cham p ion Steven Dick wo n the SemiPro Superbike class, besti ng Gary Goodfe ll ow and Randy Skvier , who was riding a borrowed 750 Su perbike. Bri an Sutton a nd Dan Zlock finished 4-5 in th e race , a nd Zlock came back to score a to p 10 fin ish in the n ext day's Superbike race. The Semi-Pro Sid ecar race pitted the Pro class' mai n p rotagonists, the Bruce L i n d / J ac k H art a nd P e te Essa ffi De nnis tea m s: Essaff a nd Crueger ra n aw a y wi th the hea t race as Lind a nd Hart n earlv ran awav with th em selves. After slid in g ou t in turn 10, the Was hi n g ton duo found themselves sliding down the drag str ip - backwa rds! A cl u tch engagement nearly flipped th e chair, but th ey recovered and wo rked back up to second. In the fina l, Essaff a nd Cruegar were co ntent to keep learn ing the trac k a nd L ind/ H ard scored th e win.
