We've ad some handling problems but e've sta rte d' to use the high han lebars ins tead of the little cli p -ons he Kata na comes with, and it's workd out better for me - I'm not the bigest guy you ever saw and it gets a ittle tough to wrestle that 420-pound otorcycle with clip-ons. It's defi itely coming together; it's just a hame that it took us until the third o the last race of the season to get it ogether." "My collarbone was feeling really ood," sai d third placer Rainey, "unil that guy H oward 's engine blew p. I was drafting Wes, and a piece of is engine got kicked up and h it me ight in the collarbone and bus ted up y faceshield. That kind of shocked e and I slowed down by two seconds lap. ' AliA Formula Two Road Racing ChampiollShip Series: Round9 A' Filice outflies Merkel ~~~ ,, "" ito' , " " " , Bruce Pe nhall and Carlisle TIres Win 1982 WOrld Speedway C hampionship. By Dale Brown KENT, WA, SEPT. 12 In only his second road racing appearance since injuring his wrist, Yamaha's Jimmy Filice was the star of the show in the 18-lap Formula Two final, showing fellow northern California riders Fred Merkel and Don Greene the way home. "It was sheer determination," said Filice from behind a king-size smile after the race, "I had to ride hard the entire way. Fred was right on my tail and I couldn't back off." Like the Superbike riders, the Formula Two riders had to contend with a wet track for their heat and a dry track for their final. The heat race almost claimed two-time 1982 F-2 winner Dave Ernde, who crashed when he lost the front end in tum two. The damage to Emde's bike was minor and he made the final , only to drop out after two laps with mechanical ills. Local favorite Rhys Howard won the heat over Filice. When they lined up for the final, F-2 points leader Sam McDonald, who missed the heat race due to a bout with a flu bug, had to start another row back when he failed to make it to the grid from the warm-up lap before the one-minute sign came out. Still, he rode to the right of the pack down the front straightaway and was with the leaders when they hit tum one. After one tour of the 2.25-mile circuit, Filice was leading Merkel and McDonald. Hugh H um ble was with the leaders un til he slid out in tum nine and lost some time before restarting. Made in America by CARLISLE MOTORCYCLE TIRES.
