Wh en i t was a ll said and done, Evans had a big lead , with Gali ndo finishin g second over Pridmore and Miller. Mark Brelsford clinched the 1972 AMA Grand National Champ io ns hip a t the Atlanta Mile. The H arleyDav idson team rider finished 14th in th e National , an d locked u p th e title w hen chief p o ints ri val Gary Scott o n ly fin ish ed 13th. The race was wo n by H arley-Davidso n rider Dave Sehl over a no ther H -D pilo t, Rex Beauch a m p and Yamaha- mounted Do n Castro. T he J u n io r event was wo n by Sco tt Brelsford with Billy Fields seco nd and Steve Gardner th ird. Ste ve Bast won the Califo rn ia Sta te Sp eed way Championship for th e fo urt h time in a ro w. The elder Bas t bro th er scored 14 points to ta ke the ti tle. Mike Ba st and Mi ke Konle wo u nd up tied for seco nd, with Bas t win n ing the run -off. After run ning about 40 th ov erall at th e sm oke bo m b, Tom Brooks atta cked the desert with his killer 125 DKW a nd too k the overall win in the Stu m p Jumpers ' D-3 7 ha r e scra m bles. A.C. Bakken wa s second overall o n a big H u sky, a nd J im Fi sh back ro u nded o u t th e top th ree on a 250 CZ. A bu lle ti n from th e Internatio nal Si x Days Trial in Czech oslovakia in d icated th a t the U .S. Wo rl d T rophy team was still intact an d o n ti me, wi th Dane Leimbach su bsti tu tin g for Tom Penton. However .
