Campbell claims first CMC Pro win By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA, AUG. 29 Former NMA Mini Expert racer Todd Campbell is now an upcoming 125cc Pro, and for the past two weeks he has been giv- 34 ing Johnny O'Mara a tough time at Saddleback. today, Campbell took his Team Green machine to the track and defeated Yamaha's Scott Burnworth and Honda's Ron Turner to take the 125ccPro Continental Motosports Club Motocross victory. " Campbell proved to. be the fastest at the start of both motos, and he took the holeshot in the first moto ahead of his teammate Tracy Meeks. Meeks fell prey to several top riders, and ' Burnworth flew by him in no time at all. Soon Turner and TeamTamm rider Dean Cates pushed Meeks back to fifth place. Burnworth trailed Campbell, but could not get close enough to pass the new .Pro rider. Turner and Cates came through the finish line in third and fourth . Campbell's Kawasaki came down the starting hill first again in the second round of racing. Ron Turner was trying to get Todd, but he had Burnworth to worry about, and just past.the canyon section the positions .changed as Burnworth took over second. Burnworth set out to ' get Campbell, but made a few mistakes, .and then his bike appeared to have , tro u bles as be dropped back many bikelengths. At the checkered it was Campbell, Burnworth, Turner and Gomez. Two firsts'gave Campbell his first 125cc Pro win in CMC Motocross, and no doubt this will be the first of many. Burnworth won the second place money over Turner and Gomez. On Saturday, Peter Lepp and Rudy Dickinson engaged in quite a battle in the 125cc Intermediate class. Lepp took the win and today he was out to • defeat Dickinson once more. However, Dickinson had a better performance and he managed to take the win. In the first molO, Lepp had the early lead, but he missed a shift near the finish comer, and Dickinson flew on by. Lepp was riding a stock Suzuki, and it didn 't equal the R&D Racing Engines-prepped Suzuki of Dickinson. Chns Taylor followed Dickinson through the finish line with Lepp in' third and Rick Atkins, the CMC finish flagger, tak ing fourth. In the final moto it was more of a two man battle between Dickinson and Taylor. They finished in that order with Jeff Clark, not to be confused with Mark Barnett's mechanic, running third. Lepp was back in eighth place and not a threat. Dickin. son took two firsts and landed the top trophy over Taylor, Clark and Herrera. Results 60 JR: 1. Merk lerll90za (yem) . , 60 INT: 1. These two collided and the ambulance crew had to check out the situation. Once again, Vorndran grabbed the lead position when the second moto . got underway. Ron Bunn took his Kawasaki to second plce, and he improved his score this moto greatly: Mapes was running in third and out toget the two leaders, and he did just that. Bunn was caught off guard at the barrel comer before the finish, and Mapes made his move. Mapes took over second and was after Vorndran. Sure enough, Mapes caught Vorndran on the comer before the IT jump, and he took over the lead. Overall it was Mapes, Vorndran, Delgado. iBunn and Scott Bell. After the race Mapes stated, "616 (Ron Bunniwas a piece of cake to pass, but 86K (Denny Vorndran) was my main concern, because he beat me in the first rnoto." This class was better than usual tonight with several new riders including Bill Delgado plus the Bell brothers, Scott and Brett who finished fifth and seventh. Results Motivated Mapes takes CMC Ascot By Tom Coiiey GARDENA, CA, AUG. 25 It was ,a two man battle for the 250cc Intermediate win in tonight's Continental Motosports CIub Motocross at Ascot. Trading moto wins were Duane Mapes , from Corona and Denny Vorndran from Redondo Beach. The final moto determined the overall winner as Mapes zapped Vorndran for the pass and earned the first place trophy. Vorndran took his number 86K Honda to the lead in the first moto and, at Ascot, that is a clear advantage. Suzuki of Van Nuys rider Bill Delgado is consistent in the 125cc Intermediate class, but this time he hopped on a Suzuki 250. Bill was doing great in second place till Mapes crept up and executed a pass on the old concessions comer. Mapes took care of Delgado and then the race was strictly between the leader Vorndran and Mapes. When the y came to th e finish line the order was Vorndran , Mapes, Delgado and Jablonski, who , just advanced to the Intermediates, At the finish line, one might assume that the action is to stop, but Kai 60 JR: 1. Scott scoots at CanyonMX By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, AUG. 28 With Canyon's. track prepped to a tee, the 125cc Beginner wins with Scott taking the overall. The battle started early as Scott (Hon ) jammed down the straight in the first moto only to have his lead taken away by Gramlick in the third turn. . The Team Green rider in first gained a few seconds on Scott, while Dave Birmingham had more to worry about than the riders in front. Bill Joyce was pursuing him relentlessly, with Scott McGrath jamming from behind after a bad start. McGrath decisively took over third, and just as quickly dropped out of contention. Gramlick and Scott pulled way ahead of the pack but not close enough for their positions to change. Birmingham dropped down to fifth while Jeff Ellis cruised in for third with Joyce not far behind. 'I n the second moto Scott took the lead with Mike Campbell and Gramlick close behind. By the second lap McGrath had overtaken Campbell and Tad Davis had put away Gram- • lick, but not for long. Gramlick regained his third and held it while Scott and McGrath went 1-2. . Results PEEWEE NOV: 1. Demon Wetkins (Vem); 2. Chip Voung (Yem). PEEWEE AM : 1. J immy Button (Yem). 80 BEG: 1.
