The top three finishers from eac h of the four heats wou ld transfer to the National. Heat one saw Morehead a nd Goss off and running. Morehead led wireto-wire for the win wi th Goss pressu ring, but not able to make the move he needed. Goss settled for second . Third went to R on n ie Jones after he maneuvered his way past Steve Eklu nd a nd Keith Day. The second heat we nt to a restart after Terry Poovey bumped leader Lance Jones off th e groove in turn th ree on lap one. T hat move cost Poovey $100, a penalty for ro ugh riding. All riders made th e restart . Gary Scott took the lea d w i th J ones , Springsteen, Poovey and Scott Parker following .Jones soon re tired . Springsteen pressured Sco tt all th e wa y, but Scott hung on for the win with Springsteen second. Po ovey grabbed th e las t tra nsfer. It was th e fastest heat of the even ing, giving Scott the pole for the National. There were five riders, led by Rob Cra bbe, all scra tch ing for the lead in the open ing laps of heat th ree. G raham mov ed past Sco tt Drake for th ird by lap three and set his sig h ts on Tim Mertens in second. Mertens closed on Crabbe as Graha m gobbled u p th e distance to th e fro n t runn ers. On lap six, G rah a m got sid ewa ys com in g off turn four , low-sided and slid into the outside track barrier. H e co u ldn' t restart th e bike a nd fin ally pushed it off to th e pits. Hank Scott, riding for Team H onda in place of injured Mike Kidd, inherited third and follo wed win ner Cr abbe and Mertens home for h is sp ot in the National.
