Scott was uncatchable in the 20-1ap National, run on the Erie County Fairgrounds limestone oval. Third place finisher Springsteen, through a combination of Ricky Graham going down in an easy slideout while running third in his heat and not advancing to the semi plus a crash in the National and a 15th place finish out of the points by Randy Goss, vaulted into the command position. Graham had h eld th e points lead since April 17. The race for second place in the National went to Ted Boody when challenger Steve Morehead's bike blew its engine with two laps to go. Morehead's demise moved Springsteen into third followed by Terry Poovey and Rob Crabbe. " It 's been so long, 1 almost forgot what it feels like to win a National," said Gary Scott afterwards. Scott, in his 11th season, posted his last National win on July 5, 1981, in the Topeka (Kansas) Half Mile. " I can't tell you how great it feels. "I have the points lead now and I'm not going to give it up without a real fight." Poovey collected his fourth aboard a bi ke lent to him by Junior rider Kenny Parker. : T m saving my bike for the mi les," said Poovey. Crabbe thanked Mills Harley-Davidson, John Sullivan, Maxie Shoes and Bell for their help with his program. The shake-up in the point standings now shows Springsteen with a two point lead - 174 to 172 - over Graham in their battle. Goss, at 151, is followed closely by Poovey with 144 and Scott Parker with 136 points. Time Trials The Erie County Fairgrounds facility featured a track with long straights and tight, short corners. Steve Morehead, out late in the session, clocked top time at 23.768 seconds. Lance Jones followed with Graham and Boody notching identical times. Randy Goss, at fifth fastest, was th e final rider to break into the 23 second bracket. Chuck Springsteen, at 25.212, was the 46th and final qualifier.
